Based on the 1991 landmark action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, T2: Judgment Day puts you in the role of a T-800 Terminator, the same character Arnold played in the movie. Following the general plotline of the feature film, you are The Terminator and you have been sent back in time to protect the future savior of humanity, John Connor, and his mother, Sarah, from being assassinated by a T-1000 Terminator. You must also destroy a new form of microchip technology (based on the T-800 chip) that eventually led to machines becoming self-aware and taking over the world.

As the storyline plays out, you as The Terminator must punch, kick, and shoot your way through scads of bad guys while looking for items, characters, and weapons. These weapons include a pistol, a machine gun, a shotgun, and a multi-barrelled mini-gun. In level one you must also commandeer a motorcycle down busy streets, trying not to get yourself killed. The eight levels of action will take you to a shopping mall, a hospital, a ranch, and a steel mill, among other locations.

It comes from the future. It can take any shape and survive almost any injury (even when a 10-gauge shotgun blast opens it up like a tin can). Its mission: eliminate John Connor. Its name: the T-1000. Against it stands one hope: you, a terminator model T-800... equipped with on-screen target search displays, a lever-action Winchester, and 10 barrels of high explosives... one mean machine. Protect John Connor (before a 23,000 lb. tow-rig plows your Harley into tomorrow). Save humanity (while Uzi-armed SWAT teams try to blow you away). Terminate the T-1000 (steel mill metldown!)... or mankind is history.

You wonder why they bothered to send him back in time to fight flickery sprites with only a pathetic punch and a pop-gun. Tedious.

The game consists of five levels. Level 2 is an isometric racing game, whereupon the player must race fast enough to catch John Conner on his moped whilst using weapons to beat back the T-1000, who is fast approaching in a tractor trailer. All the other levels are side-scrolling beat 'em ups. Level 2 is omitted from the Master System and Game Gear versions. From Level 3 onward, the player is not allowed to kill human enemies, to which he will be rewarded with upgraded weaponry at the end of levels for doing so. Level 4 requires the player to visit all ends of the gamescreen in order to set explosive charges. Levels 5 has you doing some platforming before finally taking on the T-1000 in the final battle.
