Whether by yourself or with a friend (cooperatively or competitively), you can play Arcade basketball, where players never tire and fouls don't count, or you can play Simulation basketball, in which players can foul out of games and can get fatigued if they are on the floor too long. There are three levels of difficulty to choose from: Pre-Season, Reg-Season, and Showtime, the most difficult of the three.

Each team in this game has one player with a signature move, a marquee shot, or a
trademark dunk or layup, which can be performed from a specific spot on the court. For
example: Larry Bird of the Celtics can shoot a Fade Away Jump Shot, and Brad
Daugherty of the Cavaliers can slam down a Monster Dunk.

The strategy options have increased with sixty offensive plays and ten defensive sets, and you can now create, draft, edit and trade players. The expansion teams Toronto and Vancouver have also been added to the game, bringing the total to 29 NBA teams with player ratings based on the 1995-96 season, plus two All-Star and four custom teams. Team, player and user stats are saved all season long and the game supports up to five players with a Multi-Player Adapter.

Officially sanctioned by the National Basketball Association, NBA Live 97 features 29 NBA teams, two All-Star teams and four custom teams. Players can participate in an exhibition game, a full season, or the playoffs using NBA players with updated stats from the 1995-96 season. Up to five players can join in with the use of a multi-tap adapter.

A pregame introduction begins the five-on-five basketball action, complete with team comparisons and player introductions. During games you can substitute players, switch defensive matchups, and call plays for both offense and defense. If you need to brush up on your skills prior to playing an actual game, you can choose from either 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 practice modes.

Incorporating all 29 NBA teams, you can customize your own players or choose from more than 300 NBA stars. You can play the simulation mode, which incorporates the rules and regulations of real basketball, or you can play the arcade mode, which is freeform, anything goes basketball, where there are no fouls and players are invincible. In the aforementioned simulation mode, you can customize the rules to your choosing. You can play with or without defensive fouls, offensive fouls, out of bounds violations, backcourt violations, traveling, goal tending, three second calls, foul outs, fatigue, and injuries.

NBA Live 98 features many other options and features familiar to basketball fans including offensive and defensive play selection, player substitution, league standings, updated player statistics, player trades, pick and rolls, replays, and tip-ins. The action is seen from a NBA on TNT and TBS TV-style point of view, complete with authorized permission from the networks.

This sequel to Bulls vs. Blazers and the NBA Playoffs offers all 27 NBA teams and two All-Star squads from the 1993 season. Other new features include: battery backup to save league leader stats and team standings, player trades, custom teams, injuries, substitutions and fatigue, plus signature moves for 30 players.

While the basic engine is the same, the speed has been tweaked to make it faster than the original. Game modes include a full 82-game Season, Exhibition or Playoffs.
