Better Virus Protection

Does anybody know where I can find a free program that's similar to McAfee Site Advisor, but instead of scanning the websites like SiteAdvisor does, I need one that scans the downloads & attatchments on pages, cause I've been really worried about some of the things I've been downloading, they open up and just kinda run in the background (Making me believe they could be viruses :/) So ya, if anyone knows a good program that can scan all of the downloads and attatchments on webpages I'd much appreciate it ^_^

I use Norton, it works just fine. When you download something it scans it automatically, and tells you if there is a risk, if you ignore it and Norton scans the computer again, it will tell you what the risk is, and how bad it is.

Norton offers a free 30 day trial, after that it is like $70 a year.

I would look into AVG that is what I am going to get as soon as my 30 days with Norton is up. If I am not mistaken I think that AVG does scan the attachments and stuff like that but I may be wrong.

Only reason I have Norton, is the fact that Comcast supplies it to their users. I wouldn't pay for it.

AVG is a freeware antivirus program, and is one of the most trusted antivirus programs out there.
AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus Software
They also have a few versions that cost money, and are claimed to be better, but I'd stick with the free one.

DemonMask, you rock! Do you know that I have had comcast for several years and never knew about the free Norton?

I purchased a new home computer about 6 months ago and have been running commando without antivirus protection ever since my Norton trial period expired. Thanks to you, I am once again practicing 'safe surfing'.

I personally don't trust it very much. It failed to catch a virus that my cousin got hours after downloading the software. The virus made the computer useless, unless you were to wipe the hard-drive with a magnet and reconfigure everything, from OS to whatever else you need.

I hope it serves you better, and I believe it will, as that was probably a freak occurrence.

You might not have known about it because up until recently they did that with McAfee rather than Norton. I had problems with McAfee. It worked, but when it was scanning or whatever my computer was useless because it took up so much memory to run.

I went quite the time without an antivirus (pro tip: DON'T)
I got two different Trojan Horse type viruses (and two occurrences of the worse of the two)
I got the messed up virus "Winith32.ROM" which shares a name with a critical file on computers.
I got several viruses just labeled as "Downloader" by Norton.

This was over a month of time. Had Norton not caught them, I doubt my computer would be working too much longer.

Always glad to pass along news of this sort of deal.

That's a really bad idea. You have to use some kind of protection.

You should run this HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan - Trend Micro USA It is a free online virus scanner. It is not ongoing protection. It just tells you if you are currently infected. Sometimes you can be infected and the virus will secretly disable your antivirus when you install it. Housecall is a little better at preventing that. So use it first, then install your antivirus.

I accidentally uninstalled "Symantec Systems Framework" because the computer notified to me it wasn't working, turns out Norton needs it to run.
