Devil May Cry 4 takes place after the original Devil May Cry, but before Devil
May Cry 2. The game takes place in the ancient city of Fortuna, a city once ruled
by the legendary demon Sparda, who saved humanity 2000 years ago. In turn, the
city worships Sparda as a god and formed a mysterious religion, "the Order of the
Sword".
At the time, the Order was performing a ceremony in the name of Sparda when in
an instant, a mysterious man in red jumps in from the ceiling, and kills Sanctus, the
leader of the order. Now it is up to Nero to stop this man, and bring him back for
punishment.
The only thing I complain about the story is the overly used one-liners between
Dante and Nero, at first it's kind of neat, but a person can only hear so much:
Gameplay:

Devil May Cry 4 is laid out in missions, where players go from beginning to end
while slaying enemies and solving a puzzle or two. DMC4 also keeps the "stylish"
grades the series is known for, from C to SSS, players score combos by mixing up
combos, which improve the end score for more Proud Souls.
Also returning are the orbs, with red orbs collected from dead enemies and
destroyed objects, players can purchase potions and other various equipment for
use during the missions. Green Orbs increase health, Blue Orbs increase magic,
and Yellow Orbs give extra lives.
Proud Souls can be used to purchase new abilities for Nero (and later Dante) at a
set price. As you purchase new abilities, the price of other abilities goes up, but
abilities can be sold for the same amount they were bought with.
Another returning feature is the Devil Trigger. By activating this mode, Nero and
Dante gain increased speed and strength, giving them an edge in combat.
The new character that’s playable for most of the game, Nero has unique abilities
that makes him one of the most unique DMC characters. His sword the Red
Queen has a unique engine in it to increase damage and his Blue Rose revolver has
good range, but his true power comes from his possessed hand, his Devil Bringer.
With the Devil Bringer, Nero can grab onto ledges, use enemies as a throwing
weapon or shield.
After more than halfway through the game, series legend Dante picks up the slack
Nero left off. Dante plays very similar to his Devil May Cry 3 apperance, he
retains his 4 styles (Gunslinger, Swordmaster, Trickster, and Royal Guard) but
unlike DMC3, he can switch the styles on the fly using the D-Pad.
Graphics:
Of the entire series, Devil May Cry 4 has the most diverse environments, a italian
themed metropolis, a snowy mansion, a harsh jungle, and a luxurious bay keep the
game interesting to look at, while slaying hordes of demons.
Sound:
Devil May Cry 4 continues the rock soundtrack the series is known for, with some
new styles in the mix:

Challenge:
Devil May Cry 4 isn't the hardest of the DMC series, but that doesn't mean it's a
cake walk, of the entire series, 4 is probably the most balanced.
Overall:
With a brand new character and superb gameplay to boot, Devil May Cry 4 is a
must have for action lovers and is a great gate-way game for the Hack-and-Slash
genre.
