Hitler in Video Games

Over the last 30 years, videogames have given us a seemingly endless supply of memorable villains on which to hang our hate. For 26 of those years, however, one has stood head and shoulders above the rest as the favorite target of millions of angry gamers. One who has the advantage, unlike Bowser or the Gravemind or M. Bison, of actually being real. Of course, we’re talking about Adolf Hitler, infamous head of the Nazi state and prime instigator of World War II.

BS. Hitler has made appearances in only a handful of games.

Off the top of my head I can only name two.
Wolfenstein
Japanese version of Bionic Commando

The article also lists
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - which shouldn't fully count since it is a movie port.
Time Hitler - which I have never heard of and is an obscure Japanese only graphic text adventure that few people in Japan have even heard of
Command and Conquer: Red Alert - Hitler is killed in the intro story and does not exist in the real game. Stalin is the bad guy.
Persona 2: Innocent Sin - a Japanese only game. I think Hitler is only a minor character
Operation Darkness - New 360 game about a fantasy WWII.

So by my count Hitler is the boss in barely 4 games/series.

Personally, I believe there's a reason there aren't a lot of games with Hitler in them. Hitler was a very evil man and there are survivors of the Holocaust out there with descendants in the United States. Deniers aside, I really think what some of these men and women went through justifies the reality that Hitler will not be seen in too many video games. People hate him too much.

thankfully not, i'm sure that title would find its way onto the most offensive list.

hitler has appeared in a total of 23 games.

the list includes the following titles
war leaders:clash of nations, panzer general: allied assault, hearts of iron 1, 2, and 3, time gentlemen; please, BC and BC rearmed, operation darkness, cannon crotch, rush for berlin, axis & allies, war times, empire earth, c&c red alert series, persona 2, multiple games in the moh series, indiana jones, wolfenstein series, and total carnage.

i would also be willing to bet that there are multiple flash games and so on of hitler

@fenrir1887 I would think that would lead to the opposite conclusion. If people hate him so much then he would make a great bad guy to whoop up on.

@jim5cents' list. To me it doesn't seem like WWII games should really count. What else are you going to do, he was a big part of that war, you can't leave him out of the story. But games like Wallenstein, where they could easily put their story in any setting, should count.

And yeas I bet there are a whole slew of Hitler Flash games. Which brings up an interesting question, why do independent non-profit game makers use Hitler so much more than big companies?

They're not concerned about the media and social backlash that would affect the big companies' bottom lines.

This reminded me of something.. Why are there so many more WWII games based on the Euro front than the Pacific?

My first though would be most Western culture/media only focuses on Europe and America and doesn't know much about anything else.

But then, Japan makes such a large chunk of our video games that you would think there would be more games focusing on the Pacific front. Maybe since they lost they don't make a lot of games about it or because Americans don't care the games that do get made are never translated.

because hitler is arguably the most polarizing character of the 20th century, and probably in the top 10 in human history.

i think the first person shooters pertaining to wwII shouldn't count. the outcome is certain, the allies win. however, any open ended game or strategy game should count because the ending could be altered.

I don't get why people think Hitler is so taboo to have in video games. If I turn on the History channel randomly I'll probably see him screaming into a microphone and saluting his nazi buddies. Like Kong said it would make more sense to have him as a bad guy so you can kill him in creative ways.

Btw there has been a few WWII games that focused on the pacific but they aren't as popular. I really like Medal of Honor(rising sun I think it was called). You started on a ship during the invasion of pearl harbor. It was a pretty epic story driven game imo. The opening was pretty tense and chilling.

It might have something to do with how the war was fought in the Pacific Theatre. On many of the islands in which battles were fought, it was a 'total war' situation in that the Japaneese did not surrender. That forced us to do some pretty unimaginable things and game designers might be wary of taking that on.

Not to mention the game (if they were aiming for realism) would have to end with dropping the bomb.

I decided that the spoilers on the images are necessary, some people would rather not see Hitler, and in the one for Bionic Commando, it is the four frames that make up Hitler's head explosion.

Adolf Hitler: The ultimate evil humanity has seen, a taboo in many media, only a few games ever pull off the addition of Hitler, I would like to see what games have him in it, and how many there actually are.
It's especially strange that use of his image brings up so much controversy, when he is used as the villain, every time I can think of.

1. Persona 2: Innocent Sin.
The first of two games labeled "Persona 2" never made it to America, in part because of the use of Hitler.

The final boss is cyborg Hitler, and one of the best parts of the game is when you make his head explode.

I cannot think of any more right now, all I know is that the only thing that can make any game better, is killing Hitler.

So you're saying that it wouldn't make you feel warm & fuzzy inside to kill Hitler? I think that the survivors of the Holocaust should be taken into consideration, and I feel Hitler will make more appearances as they die, this is inevitable.

I can see why Hitler would be put in games where you can kill him. I think a lot of people fantasize about taking out evil villians real or imagined.

Hitler was such a evil force in history, I can see why he would be put in. Many things enter the consciousness of popular culture whether fictional or historical.

Different, perspective, but I think it's the same reason why you can beat satan/the devil in some games. I have to admit it was fun laying the smack down on big D in Dante's Inferno.

I know that's a different case then Hitler, but I think it's along the same lines.

People like to beat up famous villians.
