Re: Portal
If this is what I think it is, I saw a friend play it. It looks like a really cool puzzle game except it is 3D which I hate. I think it is based on the Half-Life engine.

Re: Portal
yeah kong, you got it
the first 10 or 12 levels or so is basically a tutorial for the 2nd half of the game, which is where it gets really fun.
i think i've seen 40 minute speed run videos...so of them are ridicious, they find ways to practically skip levels.

If you like the idea, you can play the flash version in all of it's 2D glory. The concept still holds, you just get to see it from a different view.

You would think TMT would know this but I guess he doesn't care about Kong. What a jerk.

In order
- Make me motion sick.
- Overdone. Nearly every game for a decade has been 3D.
- It rarely adds anything to the gameplay and nearly always makes the controls needlessly difficult and buggy.
I do think giving birth to new genres such as FPS is cool. Just enough is enough. I do like how it looks like some game companies (Nintendo) are starting to realize this.

Re: Portal
I think you need a good combonation of both 2D and 3D. I also think we have a fair combination of that currently though someone who doesn't follow the current industry might not realize how many 2D games are released.

This is not just some 3D game. Portal is unlike anything else you've seen, I am sure of it. Just watch this gameplay video to get a taste of how crazy it gets. Hopefully it doesn't make you sick.

You couldn't make this game unless it was 3D. I think this pushes the limits of how much people can handle in 3D, besides virtual reality or w/e comes out eventually.
Btw in case it's not obvious from the video, this is a puzzle FPS. It's part of Half Life, usually packaged with it.

Re: Portal
I don't care much for FPSes, for the most part. I can understand why people like them, and play them every so often, but for me, I see the average shooter as just the same formula as the next one, only with different settings, interfaces, weapons, etc. Cosmetic differences, really. This goes double for military ones like Battlefield and Call of Duty.
But then there's Portal, which blows them all away, in terms of originality, fun, and plot. The portal gun, despite not being able to damage anything directly, is one of my favorite video game weapons. This is the only weapon you have for the entire game, the game teaches you how to master it in the first few levels, and the rest of it is just using that knowledge. The weapon itself adds a whole new way of thinking to the genre: using physics to solve your problems, rather than brute force; at its heart, it's really a puzzle game.
And then there's the plot. With two characters in the whole game, only one of which speaks, they've made a better (and funnier) plot than the vast majority of movies I've seen. You're a test subject, forced to go through the game's trials by a dark-humored, deadpan computer who watches you the entire way, comments on your progress, and promises to give you cake after she's done with you.
Best of all, they're making a second one; it'll be out in October. With co-op multiplayer. Unfortunately, it looks like they're losing some of the minimalism that made Portal so great in the first place, by giving you more tools to work with. We'll see if that works against them or for them.
