To be honest, I never knew that the game Astyanax existed before I saw it on this site. No problem though, because it is still one of the best games I have ever played. I will show you my ratings on the game and let you be the judge of whether or not you like it, because everyone has their own opinions.
GAMEPLAY:
You play the role of an average high school freshman named Astyanax. He keeps having dreams of a girl saying his name and cannot understand why. One day, while he was walking down the street, he hears a voice say his name twice before a flash of light appears on the horizon and he blacks out.
You wake up in an opposite world called Remlia. You have been summoned there by the Fairy named Cutie. She has brought you there to save Princess Rosebud, the girl in your dreams, from the evil clutches of the dark wizard Blackhorn. Since you are the chosen warrior of Remlia, you must wield the Magix ax and fight your way to Blackhorn and defeat him to save the princess and return to your safe and warm home.
GRAPHICS:
Well, the graphics in this game are not going to get your attention. They are very few shades of color and they do not blend together well. Mostly only the average everyday colors and little to no mixes or variation. Still they are not terrible for their time, so I am going to give the graphics for this game a 3 out of 5. Not bad right?
SOUND/AUDIO:
The sound track of this game is quite simple. Nothing special, mainly the average looping of the music and the dull nintendo music sound. Although, it does sound a bit like the sound track to another good nintendo game (Ninja Gaiden). Oh well, still worthy of a heavy 4 out of 5 in my book because I could listen to it all day.
REPLAY VALUE:
Astyanax strikes me as one of those timeless games that can be played an endless amount of times without reaching the dead end of inevitable boredom. I have played this game and beaten it many times myself, and I could still play it many more times. I've never gotten bored of it, and I do not believe the average gamer would either. With all of that in mind, I give Astyanax's Replay Value a perfect 5 out of 5.
CHALLENGE:
This game, to be entirely honest, is not really challenging at all. It is a quite simple sidescrolling action platformer where the enemy comes at you head on with the unimaginable surprise of a flying object from nowhere. Other than that, not really at all challenging in my book.
The bosses do get quite challenging at times, which is why the rating is as high as it is. Unfortunately, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 (Still seems a little high to me) because of my troubles with the bosses.
OVERALL:
This game is a timeless classic that should never be forgotten by the retro gaming community. This game deserves a bulky 4 out of 5 overall (really 3.75 rounded up) due to its perfect score in replay value, average scores in challenge and Graphics, and its absolutely outstanding score in sound.
