Doctor Who

Well boys you knew it was coming. I have to know if any of you watch the Sci-Fi series Doctor Who and what you think of it in general. Classic series or the new series. My favorite Doctor is number 4 Tom Baker of course. Then of course there is me.....I am The Doctor of RU.

yes, i watch it. being the age that i am, i have only seen the newer series, so i've only seen Chris Eccleston and Dave Tennant play him, but i am going to try and watch as much of the older series as i can.

I only watched it when I was very young. I remember he had a scarf. That's about it. Oh and the Phonebooth.

Hey Doctor! Yes, I am a big Whovian. I like both the classic and new series (NUWHO?). I consider them all the same series, though.

As for me, I agree with you on Tom Baker. He is definitely my favorite Doctor, and brought that real alien quality to the role. My list as of today would probably look like this:

1. Tom Baker
- The best, most alien, and maybe most capable of all of the Doctor's aspects (regenerations if you will). 4 rocks!

2. David Tennant

- To me 10 manages to capture a lot of that alien feel that I like.

3. Colin Baker

- I think Colin got screwed over by the BBC (aka Michael Grade). He did a good job at balancing the serious and the comedy and is a fine actor to boot. I also like some of his stories (i.e. Vengeance on Varos, Mark of the Rani, etc.) quite a bit.

4. Jon Pertwee

- I enjoyed his take on the Doctor, but I just hate so many of the stories he did that he ranks lower on the list than he would otherwise. For me the stories became so repetitive, because of his exile on Earth, that many of them lost some their entertainment. To be fair there were some very good stories in there like Carnival of Monsters, the Auton stories, the Three Doctors, and several others, but I just got so sick of seeing all the episodes in caves with some corporate villian killing the enviromnent.

5. Patrick Troughton

- Troughton made the Doctor fun. It's too bad so many of his episodes are lost.

I really liked a lot of his companions though like Jamie, Zoe, and Victoria.

6. Peter Davison

- I think Peter would have made it higher on the list if that horrible horrible Teagan hadn't ruined so much of his tenure for me. Every time she was on screen I wish that a Dalek could somehow be nearby as well. Oh well...

7. William Hartnell

- The one Who started it all (Who Indeed!). I thought his portrayal was pretty good and he definitely set the grumpy tone for some of the other guys later on. Plus, Ian and Barbara are still some of my all time favorite companions.

8. Christopher Eccleston

- I like what he did, but he would be higher on the list if not for the fact that he only stayed around for one season (and hates Who on top of it. Shame! Shame!)

9. Paul McGann

- Kind of like Eccleston, McGann just didn't do enough stories. However, I liked his portrayal and I think he scores bonus points for being in so many good audio stories.

10. Sylvester McCoy

- I like his portrayal, but it was kind of a bummer that they never finished a lot of the storylines when the series went on hiatus. I think there was more to his character that just wasn't seen.

Nice to know I'm not the only Whovian around here. ;D I had a bunch of the old series uploaded on Youtube at one time until BBC said "Off with his head" and pulled them all.

Sadly just like my video game collection my stock of Doctor Who movies is limited from that fun thing called "Lack of Money.

Absolutely! I am a major Sci Fi fan in general, but Doctor Who is definitely one of my faves! That's too bad about the online episodes. I typically watch the DVDs, but I just buy a couple at a time when I have the $.

Okay, so a new Doctor Who season is about to start, and this one will be leading up to Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. I thought this would be a good time to bring this thread back the dead.

I've always enjoyed Dr. Who when I can catch it. My Mother is a MAJOR Whovian and has been watching it for as long as I can remember. (And most likely before.)

Awesome. Your mother has excellent taste. I wish I had grown up with it, but it was hard to find in alot of the U.S. PBS would play it here and there, but I never really understood what was going on. I really got into it with the relaunch of the series, and started watching regularly since David Tennet's first episode. Since then, I also got most of my family into it too.

Since I didn't see it much early on, I mainly saw Tom Baker episodes. After I got hooked, I went back and have tried to watch most of the classic episodes on DVD. Overall, my favorite Doctors are 4 and 10 with Baker edging out Tennet slightly.

Perwee was also terrific, and I honestly like all of the Doctors to an extent. Who is your least favorite?

Least favorite is a hard call, since I like all the ones I've seen so much.

I haven't really watched any episodes with 5-7, nor did I watch the movie with 8. To be totally honest, I just couldn't stand Tennant during his last year as the doctor. (when he appeared in the season comprised of the specials, I don't mean the season with the Donna Noble character) I still liked him overall, though.

Fair enough. I like all of the actors who have played the Doctor, though my last favorite era overall was Peter Davison's tenure as 5. The sad thing is I am a very big fan of Peter Davison as an actor. I just hated his companions (especially Teagen!!!

), and I feel that sort of derailed his era.

I liked Tennant's whole era pretty well. Matt Smith is doing a decent job too. I just love Who.

It sounds like you all like it, so I'll give it a go. Netflix has both old school and the 05'-11' seasons plus movies. Would you all recommend I watch the old or new version first?

I think the stories are great from all eras. Here is what I would suggest: if you are really into special effects, you should be aware that the odl stuff was made when effects were bad compared to today. The characters were still great and all of that, but it looks dated.

Having said that, the new stuff can be enjoyed if you haven't seen the old stuff but there are references and layers you might not get without seeing some old stuff.

I started with the new stuff myself in an episode called, "The Christmas Invasion". If you like Sci-Fi stuff, chances are you will enjoy Doctor Who.
