To recommend a book

I have been reading a book called "What is the What" by Dave Eggers. I was told that Dave Eggers was a great author from a rapper I am a fan of, and I figure good writers have good taste in writers, so I checked out this book (the only by him at my library).

It is a novel/autobiography, which confused me until I read the prelude, which said that the guy it is about told his story to Dave Eggers, who then wrote a novel based on this guys life, but alos about him. Kind of a weird concept I guess.

It is about a guy who was a refugee in Sudan after the civil war broke out, and all the things he had to go through to get where he is today. In the book he lives in Atlanta in present day.

It is a very interesting read, very well written, and I would recommend it to anyone that finds the story of a Sudanese refugee appealing in the slightest.

I really didn't like The DaVinci Code movie. I am very uninterested in an Angels and Demons movie.

The Screwtape Letters is a pretty good book by CS Lewis... actually, most books by him are pretty good. There are some that are explicitly about religion and Christianity (for more serious reading) or there are the children's books of Narnia if you want to read those...

Not sure how you meant to say that but The Chronicles of Narnia have a not so subtle christian message in them.

Aslaan is comparable to jesus and that one kid is like Judas.

Good to know. I liked Narnia but the religious message ruined it for me. I wouldn't recommend it to kids for that reason.

I recommend reading The Stand by Steven King. It was a really exciting book that pushed the religion issue to the edge.

I recommend Time Enough For Love from Robert A. Heinlein, it's a bit long, but it's a good sci-fi book, and the humor is a bit crude at times, and In case I've recommended that one before, I'll also recommend Childhood's End[Arthur C. Clarke], it did get a bit too paranormal for me towards the end, but it's still a very good read, not to mention Karallen is epic(If I'm spelling his name right)

I doubt many people here are willing to read that since it's so long. I haven't read it yet but I heard it's worth it.
Since you like long stories did you ever read The Dark Tower? Lord of the Rings? This goes to anyone really, I don't want any answers like "I don't read big books". Sure it's conversation but did we need to know? :P

I read the Dark Tower and Stand.
I think Stephen King has lots of interesting ideas for books. I just don't think he is a very good writer. I did read several of his books as a kid though and started Dark Tower when I was about 12 and he didn't finish writing it until I was 26. That made me mad. Good series though. A must read if you are a King fan. It ties all of his other books together. Eyes of the Dragon was my first and favorite King book. Flagg appears in all three.

Yeah actually I'm not a fan of Kings books or movies besides a few exceptions.
Of his books I liked The Dark Tower and some of his short stories I read, short like literally short stories. Stuff published in groups with other writers ect.
I liked the movies It(Tim Curry? awesome), Salems Lot, The Shining(although the book was a lot different I hear) and Pet Cemetery. I'm sure I'm forgetting some since he's done tons of stories for everything imaginable.
I agree he's not a great writer. He seems to run out of ideas and just go for some "shocking" gore or wierd plot twist that makes no sense. Although he kinda ties those into the Dark Tower. Maybe he made the Dark Tower to make his crazy plots make sense, guess it depends on how you look at it.

Random King story. I lived in Maine for a couple years and the mother of a girl I knew went to college with him. Said he was anti social and hung out in the library. It's believable because she's his age group and lives in the right area(and went to that college). Also it sounds realistic.
Another small one, I saw an old mill where he filmed for one of his movies, I forget which one atm.

I was more into Koontz when I was a kid than King. That being said, King did write the novel that was later translated into my favorite movie; Stand By Me.

Different Seasons is four short stories - The first one was made into Stand By Me, The second one was Shawshank Redemption. Two of his best stories and best movies. But nearly all of his other movies suck.

What's wrong with Corey Feldman?

I have read The Shining, The Green Mile and Misery. I didn't like Misery so much. The other 2 were pretty good.

And @ Dudebro: The length of a book doesn't really matter to me, only if it keeps my attention or not. I have read a few 1000 page books in my time. But I also tend to start books and not finish them if I get bored of them.

Don't get me wrong, I like books of any length(as long as they don't suck). I was just asking because most people are intimidated by larger books.

I'm the same way with books. I start a lot and never finish them. One of these days I'll finish Dune or Hitchhikers Guide.

If it is then it's classified wrong. Nonfiction is about things that are true, like things you can prove. Made up stories are fiction.

I really wasn't trying to start another religious debate.
