Pac-Man for the 2600 is rediculos, rectangles instead of dots, a big square instead of fruit, an awful colour scheme and flickery ghosts, for shame.....

Re: java atari 2600 emulator
I found a flash pac man game where whenever you turned the screen turns with you, you can spin around to make the ghost get dizzy and be stunned for a few seconds and you could jump. And there were teleporting boxes.

Re: java atari 2600 emulator
ugh... for one they are called powerpellets (if you watched the pac-man series you posted about you would know that) "dashes" if anything would be because of the horrible graphics.

Re: java atari 2600 emulator
Because of the horrible graphics, Atari decided they would cover up their mistakes by renaming everything. And this is true, Iv'e just looked at the manual.
- Pac-Dots -> Video Wafers
- Fruit -> Vitamin
- Power Pellet -> Power Pill
(The power pellets are sometimes called poper pills anyway so that last bit isnt important.)

and isn't pac-man promoting substance abuse? Power Pellet = Steroids per say..
Video Wafers is a crack up

They dont usualy call them Power Pills anymore because calling them pills makes people think of drugs. Now they are Power Pellets!

Re: java atari 2600 emulator
I've just realised something, we have went very far off topic, it started off about 2600 games on this site and its ended up as two people having a discussion about dots with bad graphics, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN! Funny stuff

Re: java atari 2600 emulator
The point is Atari didn't really care about staying true to the game itself. It's just about rushing the game out so people will buy it.
Ever heard of the E.T. game for atari 2600? It's considered the worst game ever made. It's also the game that basically sunk Atari as a home console company.
Actually reading wikipedia about this Pac Man it says combined with E.T. it caused the downfall of Atari and hurt the video game industry overall.
Thanks alot Atari.

Now its on...
A) Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 doesn't look like that because it was rushed. The 2600 had a VERY limited graphical engine. About half as powerful as the Colecovision. The system is incapable of making small round objects because of its incredibly low PPI.
B) E.T. is only considered the worst game ever made by internet noobs, new-school fanboys, and losers who hopped on the bandwagon because they have no idea what they're talking about. E.T. was a masterpiece for the 2600, arguably the best or second-best game on the system and was the first to introduced many new elements to video gaming.
C) E.T. didn't sink the Atari 2600. E.T. was introduced unfortunately right before the crash and flopped because of it and a media blitzkrieg.
D) The Great Crash of '82 was caused by three main factors;
1. An over-saturated market with, count 'em, 13 consoles, each with their own library.
2. The introduction to affordable personal computers, each supporting games themselves.
3. A spiraling price-war
Your Wiki is wrong in this instance.

I see I hit a sore spot Tenser.
I never said wiki was right about it just reporting what I read.

So which one am I? I agree it's not unplayable but there are reasons why the game is so hated. It was a huge letdown for people, they did a piss poor job of being faithful to the movie and the graphics were horrible(I'll admit there's not much they could do about that).
But that being said, I barely ever played it as a kid(probably because I thought it sucked). I'd be interested in hearing why you think it's not horrible.
Also, a quote from Howard Scott Warshaw(the guy who designed and created E.T. for atari)...
Quote:
|
I made that game start-to-finish in five weeks. No one has ever come close to matching that kind of output on the VCS. It could definitely be a better game, but it's not too bad for five weeks.
|
Seems to me he admits he was rushed making it. I'm not blaming Atari really, just the business decisions that ruin what could be good games.
Also I reread the wiki page and I was wrong. They say E.T. contributed to the crash not caused it.
Lastly, I was trolling alittle when I said "Thanks alot Atari". You know, being overdramatic for laughs.
