Bob Pape was a freelance bedroom coder during the 1980s in Britain, writing programs for the ZX Spectrum for established software companies.
He has released a look back book on the process of porting R-Type to the ZX Specturm on the internet. It describes the very heavy challenges of porting an arcade machine to the ZX Spectrum, the mega popular PC platform in the UK at the time, which compared to the arcade board may as well have the processing power of a cheese sandwich.
It also details his dealings with several other people and companies, many of who ripped him off at every stage of development, which unfortunately was a very common practice in software factories in that era.
