Robotron (arcade)

With all the hype around Robotron at the moment in the CAG scene, I realised I had NEVER actually played it before. Gave it a whirl tonight and scored ~100k.
Its actually a decent game. One I would consider getting seriously in to

What control layouts do you guys use? Its pretty difficult trying to mimic two joysticks on the keyboard. I wonder if using a PS3 controller is easier.

What do you think of Robotron?

You dont find that too cramped? WSAD and the arrow keys worked ok

I would just use the WSAD keys and the num pad keys. Not that I'm any good at Robotron.

I have an X-arcade so I use the twin sticks when I play.

If I was to play on the keyboard it would be WASD and IJKL.

I don't think it makes much of a difference but I think I changed it because of some problem with someone else's keyboard.

Use something with two sticks/analogs. Its going to get really tough as the game gets harder. And it will when you hit the 30s.

if using the keyboard you must use the numpad for 4 of them...otherwise you max on 3 letter key presses so can't move and shoot diagonally at same time if you just use letter keys. the numpad keys are on separate register so you can press "w","a", "4" and "5" and all of those register. of course if you have a gaming keyboard all letters may work also..but most keyboards max at 3 inputs for letters.

this is something for those using x-arcade dual sticks for their config also..don't set equivalent of all 8 directions to letters. set the 1 stick to letters, the 2nd stick to numpad.

I use the dual analog thumb sticks, similar to a PS2/3 controller.

Is there anyway my scores got deleted for this game? I'm almost certain I had some decent ones up there, there is a chance I didn't submit them since they weren't first place but I don't think that is the case.

I recently started using my ps3 controller for some pc games and it works pretty well for games like this, the only problem is I keep having to disable the tilt actions from the gyroscope on motionjoy, but aside from that all is well, even started using it 2d fighters.

Robotron is a fun game but one I lost interest in it because I kept dying on the same wave and just couldn't get any further. I don't remember which wave # it was but it seems all my scores would be between 150 and 170k.

You should search Youtube for McAllister's record 5 man game. Arguably the most impressive display of CAG skills ever. Dk gets all the press but I think this record is the holy grail of all video game records.

Funny story about Robotron, the reason for the duel joysticks is that the guy who developed it (name escapes me) had a broken arm, and could'nt play test his game properly using buttons, so he used duel joysticks, and found that the game was better this way.

X-arcade with dual joysticks seems like the best option. Wonder what Seahawk uses?

Im not surprised JM has the 5 man record, he seems to be able to play any classic arcade game with relative ease

I hear you man, I want to get good at it but I hit a wall at like wave 10/11 every single time and there is nothing I can do to improve. Those first few waves are fun but that difficulty completely changes on a single wave.

Rusty first go, but not bad overall. I never really got too good at the game. I could hit 60s a couple times but usually wound up eating it in the high 30s.

Why aren't we able to watch the replays of robotron or smash tv on RU? To me those are the most interesting games to watch, just like perfect tetris. There is an element of beauty in it. Anyone can appreciate that high level of skill.
