World records
Hi,
the world re4cords on here are different from other sites. for example, bomb jack is 66 million. i don't doubt this can be done, as i got 65 million myself recently, but how was this verified and by whom? how comes i have a record on here that is nowhere near other sites scores?
cheers!!

What sites are the scores higher on? I think it depends what sites RU uses as a reference for world records, and also how often RU updates these scores.

Re: World records
The only discongruity between the scores of different sites are the versions of the games used and maybe slight rule differences. I know some sites want the default difficulty to be highest on some games and other sites just want the default load up. Either way Kong and the mods here have done well gathering and listing milestones for most all games.

ok, there is a problem.
bomb jack (arcade) on this site is using the hardest setting of dip switches.
i can absolutely garauntee you that the 66 million record is played using euro settings (medium/medium/easy) rather than RU settings. the usual settings for records is hard/medium/easy.
you need to change either the bomb jack settings to hard/medium/easy or change the record to LORD GAZ'S record, as he uses your settings.
you cannot have a game on your site to use hard settings and the record you advertise use easy settings.
sorry for the injection, but i'm a bomb jack nut job!!!!

Re: World records
May I suggest you don't worry so much about world records and just attempt to beat the RU scores? There are a number of games that have different settings that what TG requires for "World Records". Solar Quest is an example. TG rules state three ships to start but default is four which is what we play with here at RU. If I beat the score starting with an extra ship, is it really a "World Record". You'll also find that whatever version RU is using for MAME is not what TG requires for "World Records" which also causes problems on some games. For example, Pro Baseball Skill Tryout. There is a glitch in the .106 MAME version which allowed me to have such a huge score. This glitch was fixed in later versions of MAME and I can gaurantee you that you won't beat my score using RU's version of MAME. Also RU uses different rules on some games. For example, all of the records for Asteroids on TG and MARP use saucer hunting. RU won't allow me to saucer hunt so you can't really compare scores. One more issue is that at times TG uses clones while RU does not have any clones. Using Asteroids as an example again, TG uses Version 2 while RU uses the harder version 4. And a game I know you are familiar with, Astro Invader is not playable here either. They have Kamikaze but as you are aware of, even though it's a clone, Astro Invader is a very different game.
Enjoy your time here and play lots of games but the World Records are a work in progress. I actually suggested that they just get rid of tracking them for all the reasons mentioned above but it's really not a big deal. It's pretty easy to have fun around here without worrying about world records.

Re: World records
hey Coop!
thanks for replying.
this i understand, and i will be having fun here, records or not.
however, if there are records, they should at least be on the same difficulty as the RU settings.
so, like i said, the bomb jack record is bogus. it does not use the same settings as RU. it is there as a target. it is not the same as your asteroids theory. it is the same romset. you cannot use a record score on easy settings and make that the record of hard settings. it's wrong.
cheers mate!!

incidentally, you said: "May I suggest you don't worry so much about world records and just attempt to beat the RU scores?"
the bogus record i mention is the RU record...

Re: World records
I just looked at some of the records at
http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~slunk/GAMES.pdf
and I think that I found an error.
For Gulf Storm it says the max out score is 10 million.
I will have to double check, but I'm pretty sure that the score just roles over and doesn't max out.
I am currently playing this game and have set a new TG record for it. Its not a WR but still a new TG record. I swear that I've taken this game farther than 10 million with save states on practice runs. I usually always do this when going for a serious score because I want to know the limitations of the game and how far the game can be taken.
So I'll check this out when I have time.

Re: World records
Cool that would be good. Its a good reference list, but some scores cant be taken seriously as the compiler just throws scores in from any source.

Re: World records
agree for many games here you just are playing for the RU high score...as the settings are different from TG/MARP/etc. so you can't really compete for WR...just for RU highest score...which still is cool.

Re: World records
Wow: "Sandberg said he could theoretically take up to a 30 minute break with such a strategy, but prefers to use only four or six minute breaks instead."
That must be alot of lives...

How is the Twin Galaxy scores compiled for newer games, perhaps RU could set up someting so are scores can be regularly submited, or at least once a year in bulk?

The only emulator the old TG allowed was a 7 year old version of WolfMAME. That means no console emulators. I could convert our scores to a modern version of WolfMAME and WolfMESS because our scores are essentially wolfmame + some other stuff that can be removed for backwards compatibility. But TG would have to upgrade to a modern emulator first.
And as of now I don't even know if they will allow the old WolfMAME.
