Well, do you want the rules or the objective of the game or what?
You usually try to get the basketball into the hoop to score a various amount of points from different lengths from the hoop itself.

I was accually going to join my schools basketball team but i'm only good at shooting hoops, not really sure about all of the rules, so this will help both of us.

I don't understand this thread... what would you like to know about basketball?

I consider it my "best" (not that I'm very good) sport. I'd be happy to fill you in on what I can:
Dribbling
Travelling
Passing
Assists
Shooting
Blocks
Defense
Zone
Man to Man
Motion Offense
Full court press
Free throws

why do they call a 2 point shot a field goal

Three pointers are also "field goals" and the answer to your question is "just because that's what it's called".

My thinking on this is that anything in sports "that goes through" something is a goal and scores a point.

Soccer/football - Kick/head ball through goal = 1 point or goal.
American football - Kick ball through uprights = 3 points or field goal.
Basketball - Shoot ball through hoop = 2/3 points or field goal.

I'm not sure about soccer/football but for the other two, I think it's called a "field" goal because you are in the field of play when you score.

Not sure if it's accurate, but it sure sounds good, doesn't it. ;D
