Teddy, I'm glad you brought this up, this business of people looking down on you for no apparent reason; I live in Vancouver, B.C. and I notice the prevailing attitude on the street is quite negative here too.
I'm not talking about the young guys acting all thug/ jail culture being promoted by the entertainment industry, nor the rich evil suits looking down on other people through the windows of their Mercedes, just average folks.
The world economy is in a slump.
The only two things keeping average folks in the North American Union afloat are credit of various sorts, and the fact they keep printing more money so the world economy doesn't completely crash {while it continues to devalue daily, but that's another rant}
Joe and Jill Average are having a rough go of it right now because money is tight.
People are having to cut back, lower their standard of living, give up on their dreams .. it's really depressing stuff.
Very few people can cope with tough financial times easily, and not have it taint their state of mind .. I admire those who are able to.
So when people aren't sure about their future, when the younger generation are taking out student loan after student loan only to end up working at Muc D's with 60 000 in debt hanging over their heads .. so they take out more loans and get more credit cards .. then try their luck at the game of 'Musical Chairs' that job hunting seems to have become, and even if they get one there's no sense putting down any roots because it could be gone tomorrow.
Sorry I know this is turning into a George Carlin rant, so in summation:
Money is tight.
That sucks.
People know they're being shafted by a bunch of crooks. {who stole trillions and then laugh in our faces}
When people protest they get beat up and put in jail.
It isn't even about the 'haves' and 'have nots', it's about people
not even getting enough to survive.
That's why I think people are angry and/or depressed.
Liquor sales here in Vancouver have risen by
5 X over the last year and still going up - and it reminds me of a Russian saying that goes something like:
'You KNOW it's some tough times when the answer to every question seems to be at the bottom of the next glass of Vodka.'

Teddy, it's all of us average working class just trying to get by.
