No, you are wrong.
The 'resolution' of a game is not dependent on any ROM size or feature. It's based on the operation of the original hardware.
The original NTSC SNES console runs at either 256 or 512 pixels horizontally (game selectable), and 224 pixels vertically, progressive.
MESS is an emulator that focuses on accuracy.
It does not allow increasing the internal render resolution of its systems.
This won't be fixed by a ROM swap.
Furthermore, the reason Axelay doesn't have a higher score, is because the game is broken in the current build of MESS on site. Stage 1 will play fine, but stage 2 has the scrolling platforms in the space colony drawn in the wrong place or simply invisible. The collision hitboxes might be miscalculated as well. In any case, you will crash by not being able to see the platforms.
Again, this is a MESS emulator problem, not fixable by simple game swap.
I too would love to do a 3-loop clear of the game, but it's not going to happen. I suggest you play it on your own real console or another emulator.
