Rule 2.9

"Do NOT collect the same extra life or extra continue multiple times. Anything that allows you to start an infinite or near infinite point loop or rewards you for playing badly and not progressing naturally through the game is not accepted. If you are doing something that would allow you to get 99 lives or allows you to repeatedly play the same level over and over then you are probably doing something wrong."

So, in theory, if there were one stocked 1up just outside of a spawn checkpoint in a game like Castlevania, would I be able to grab said 1up once, die, and then continue playing(if the 1up respawns, am I allowed to even touch it?)? Would I be breaking the rule if I grabbed that 1up just once, or does it have to be more than once?

Also, if I were playing a game like Castlevania where there is a time limit for the level and 1ups can be obtained by intervals of points, would I be allowed to repeatedly kill one spawning enemy on a level so many times that I obtained a 1up before the level ended and then let the clock run out, losing that life? Is this a similar situation to the former question variant? (is this only rule breaking if I life farm on enemies twice or more in a row on the same level?)

Re: Rule 2.9

The rules here Retro Uprising - FAQ are pretty much finalized. However their wording could still be greatly improved to make them more concise, simple and easy to understand.

If you think you can help with making the existing rules more clear, then please post your suggestions here.

This particular rule was recently discussed by the mods.

Do NOT abuse extra lives or extra continues. Anything that allows you to start an infinite or near infinite point loop or rewards you for playing badly is not accepted. If a game gives you an extra life every time you play a level, you may repeatedly collect that extra life but you should only use it once. If you collect the same extra life more than then you would have lives remaining when you submit your score.

That is horribly written and will be updated so that it makes more sense. Below is a lengthy explanation of what it means.

---------------
First let's clarify what "leeching" is.
---------------
Intentionally avoiding progression towards the game's natural goal, such as a boss or the next level, in order to gain a benefit such as extra points, lives or items, is called leeching.

Exploring all areas of a level even if it is not required to finish the level, is not considered leeching. Repeatedly doing so to gain a reward multiple times is leeching.

Killing all enemies in a level is not leeching unless those enemies respawn. In that case going out of your way to kill the same enemy twice is leeching.

Leeching is normally against our rules because it ruins the spirit of competition.

However, there are two exceptions where leeching is allowed:
1. If the game has a timer that puts a reasonable limit on how long you can leech then you may maximize your points within that timer.
2. If you beat the game you may leech to improve your score.
---------------

Collecting the same extra life means:
Every time you repeat a level you are guaranteed an opportunity to gain an extra life so you could theoretically collect an extra life, die, repeat forever.

The extra life could come from an item or from points leeching or from an enemy.

If the extra life comes from two separate sources such as one from an item and one from point leeching or one from level 1 and one from level 2, then we do not consider them to be the same extra life and this rule would not apply.

If you find a 1up that matches the description of a respawning life then you may freely receive and use the extra life once. You may collect it multiple times but you can only use it once.

Example.
You start a game with 3 lives.
You gain an extra life on level 1.
You now have 4 lives.
You gain an extra life on level 2 and die.
You still have 4 lives.
You gain that same extra on level 2 again and this time make it to level 3.
You now have 5 lives but you can only use 4 of them because one of them is a duplicate.
On level 3 you die 4 times.
You have one life left. If you continue playing then your score will not count.
After level 4 you grab another extra life bringing your current lives up to 2. You still can not submit your score because you used all of your available lives before you collected the extra life on level 4.

Re: Rule 2.9

Would it be better to say something like

"You can only gain the same extra life ONCE. If a 1up constantly respawns in the same location on a level you may only collect it once."

I think that lessens the confusion about being free to grab it serveral times but only use it once. Problem arises if someone accidentally collects it more than once though.

Re: Rule 2.9

That was what the previous version said.

But this issue came up a few times.

Sometimes collecting it can not be avoided.

Perfect example is Tuskanni level in Darkwing Duck TG 16 one up is in a spot where you must collect it to even continue further.

If this is the case, Then one of my play throughs of Super Mario Bros 2 tournament edition should have been deemed fine, since I gained more then enough lives, over the duplicates, to be a considered ignorable.
