Re: Hackers take offline the FBI and many others
DDOS isn't hacking. Specifically if 4chan did it. Someone made a program called LOIC (low orbit ion cannon) that everyone uses for this. Basically enter the address of your target, then press ONE BIG BUTTON.
You may of heard the term TCP before. That's what we call a "Transport Protocol". TCP carries the packets (information that you exchange (upload/download) with a website so that it will show up in your browser ). TCP has a hand shaking process, basically goes like this:
My computer: "Hey google you there ?"
Google: "Yup"
My computer: "I'm gonna send you something to search for ok ?"
Google:"Ok that's cool"
My computer: "Here you go man"
Google:"Alright, here you go"
My computer:"Thanks"
This is a good way to send info, but there is a lot of exchange going on right ? That can be slow in some cases. Sure the packets more likely to go through, but there is a few steps before it does.
There is ANOTHER transfer protocol , it's called UDP. This is what skype uses. UDP doesn't hand shake ... at all. It just goes in one direction. Skype wouldn't work well with TCP. You know when sometimes there is a weird TRANSFORMERS noise when you use SKYPE ? That's because a udp packet dropped. Skyp doesn't really care about dropped packets because it's the AUDIO that's important. So 1 dropped packet might mean a SLIGHT audio glitch.
In a nutshell, DDOS attacks, are UDP floods. Basically this is what happens.
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
My computer : "Hey Google"
It's kind of vulgarized, but just to give you a good idea.
More importantly to help explain that DDOSing isn't really hacking. It's cool because anyone can do it though. So theoretically everyone in the world can just press one button to take down sites they don't like. It's a good "peoples" protest tool. Also, "HACKING" is a term that represents ingenuity in technology. Using Duct tape to fix something is hacking.
