Bearhawk should be banned from any more LOTR movie discussions.

I'm not super excited by the trailer but I do like it. I could do without the corny comic relief way of introducing the dwarves but I get that most people prefer that for some reason. What worries me is the said this will be split into two movies. So if I'm right it will end about when Bilbo gets the ring. That leaves a whole year to wait for them to finish the story. I hated that about the original movies and that wasn't intentional like this, ugh.

Btw you guys think that comment is bad? There was a petition out years ago to block The Two Towers movie, because it supposedly cashed in on the tragedy of 9/11. Little did those morons know Tolkien wrote it like a hundred years before.

I thought The Hobbit was a great book, but I just couldn't get into the Lord of the Rings. I don't often bring this up, because people are childish and just can't respect the fact that I didn't like a series everyone else in the multiverse loved. Since I didn't like the book, I didn't watch the movies. I'll watch this one though, since I liked the book.

You're right to not bring that up, it really makes no sense. I like both but I think it's pretty obvious LOTR is far and away the better of the two. The movies are also an epic event you should probably see regardless of how you feel about it.

There are a few problems I have with the books. I'm not a huge fan of "high fantasy" {things like LOTR}, I didn't like the pacing (too much walking around in the forrest), I wasn't a huge fan of most of the characters, except for Aragorn [sp?]. If the movies improved the pacing a little bit, I might like them.

The movies were superb I absolutely loved them.
The books however I couldn't stand. Several hundred pages on gay midgets running from evil monsters with there schizophrenic traveling companion isn't as entertaining as it sounds.

Well there's your problem. Tolkien pretty much invented high fantasy. The Hobbit was a kids book though so it makes sense that it didn't feel as fantasy to you.

Of course not but it's a very odd position given how overwhelmingly popular LOTR is compared to The Hobbit. I think both are great but LOTR just had so much more I couldn't stop reading it until I was done. The only parts I hated and skipped were all the damn songs and poems. Snore.

Yes. It's our generations big epic movie. The only people I know of who hated them were die hard LOTR fans who couldn't deal with some stuff being altered or removed.

Normally I'd say something about being more sensitive towards gays and midgets but I can't really argue with this. I disagree about the book being worse about it though. I thought Sam and Frodo were really gonna kiss a few times in the movie. When I read the books I just thought they were close friends who who do anything for each other(and no not sexually).

@DB- Yeah, I think right when Bilbo gets the ring or shortly after, the movie ends. The second is about the return back home. It's going to be called "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" I believe.

@NT- I never got that vibe. He's an ancient being who's so powerful the ring has no effect on him. Tolkien never explained his backstory but it's pretty implied that he's one of the god like creatures in that universe. If the ring was made by one of the lesser gods then that means Tom is one of the true gods. Gandalf is a lesser godish creature and he's terrified of the ring. I think it's a great plot point and I was sad they axed it. He's in the LOTR mmo though.

@Chris- Pretty sure I heard the second movie will spend time with the search for Gollum, but I could be wrong it's been a while.

Yes. My two biggest complaints about The Hobbit will be removed most likely in a movie format; reading songs and repeating the entire dwarf roster 500 times.

I read the first chapter and the last chapter for a book report in grade 7, not excited for this. Weird thing is my opinion of the LOR series has gone from thinking they are awesome to thinking they are mediocre despite not ever watching them since their theatrical releases. Just getting old I think.

Finally saw it today. It was great. Another very well done job by Peter Jackson. Martin Freeman (Bilbo) did an excellent job and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) was great as usual. He had the majority of beast moments in the film lol.
