To the people who don't play Minecraft
So let's hear it. Maybe you have some bad info or you're on the fence and we can help you out. I know the game isn't for everyone but I can't understand how this game has such a small following on a site dedicated to retro stuff. Yes the game is not retro but it seems to be very much designed to look and feel like it is.
I'm making this separate topic because the people I'm talking to will probably never check the MC topic. I'll delete this eventually so no one start wringing their hands about multiples. Do not discuss anything that would belong in the other topic.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
Some people like to draw as a hobby. I do not. I think of this game more akin to drawing or virtual legos. All you do is build. No goals or challenges.
I haven't played it, that is just my impression and reason for not playing.
It seems like it has some but not all aspects of games like Rogue and Civ. I like those types of games but I don't think it has the particular aspects of them that I enjoy.
Plus it is 3d which is a deal breaker for me.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
Building is a main part of the game but it's not the only thing you do. Exploration is also a huge draw for lots of people. The whole world is randomized so you'll never see the same thing twice. You can literally walk for hours and see countless amazing landscapes. To top that off you also have gigantic caves to explore complete with pitch blackness(until you put up torches or find some lava) and that sense of isolation that people seem to love. So really if you don't care about building you don't have to bother with it. A simple shelter is more than enough to hold your gear and let you craft more.
I can't speak about Rogue since I've never played it but I don't see the connection to Civ.
I know about your issues with 3D but are you sure this would be a problem? You can play MC at at very slow pace if you want, no vertigo inducing camera movement and such. I think I remember you said you tried playing the Conan MMO? If so MC should be fine for you.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
Sorry, DB. Not only do I hate downloading, I hate building games. Not to mention it costs money. Trust me if it was free I would give it a shot and probably not like it.

That's weird, not sure how to even reply to that. FYI the game takes almost no time to download.
Like I said above it's not only about building.

One time cost of about 20 bucks is a pretty damn cheap for a game of this scale.

It risks viruses and memory space. It'd have to be something interesting that I have no other way of playing for me to download.

Still, 20 bucks is 20 bucks I could buy a Megaman figure that the Capcom store finally restocked, Disgaea 4 Premium pack, it also can be my reserve money. Funds are tight DB.

Only if you download from shady places. I doubt you're gonna get any viruses from downloading major games that are played by millions around the globe.

Yeah and 20 bucks is still cheap for a game that has this much content and more on the way.

Yep, and it made me sick.
$20 is also a deal breaker for me. I am both cheap and broke and there are several free games that I would rather play.
But I think the answer you are looking for is simply building and exploring by themselves do not sound interesting to me. I can sometimes like those aspects in games but not if they are the main focus and especially not if they are the only focus.

I am glad the game exists and is so popular though. I like that originality and a small budget and a small dev team can still grab some gaming headlines.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
The main reasons I don't play are because a) I currently do not have a penny to my name (literally) and b) would need to look up how to run it on linux.
Otherwise I'd be pretty much game!

I know, but it's also bloated space with a new version every other week or so, or what I read in the topic.

It's cheap but it's also the reason I don't want to buy it. Rather buy something to do on the go.

I guess the case could be made for MC having some roguelike elements but I think that's mainly because everything is randomized.
Civ has nothing on MC when it comes to exploration. With Civ you're on a limited flat board that has a small overall map, even on the highest setting. MC is bigger and more dynamic than any other in game exploration I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. The caves alone put Civ to shame in this respect.

Yep, and it made me sick.

That is really a shame. I know it's not the greatest idea but are you able to take any meds to help with that? I think if I shared your problem that's what I'd do.

Well I can't argue with your personal tastes and other issues. I just figured you would really enjoy this game because it's so creative and we have a community going. We'll carry on without you but it just won't be as cool.
@Squall- Linux might be a deal breaker. I think it works for it but from what I saw you're better off running it on Windows for stability and support from the devs. I could be wrong though, not something I'd really need to pay attention to.
@Tails- You're reading the topic wrong. When a new update comes out there's always some issues but it's not as bad as all that. Btw my MC issues turned out to be my PC(I think).
Also I'm pretty sure they are in the process of making a mobile version.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
To the people who don't play Minecraft:
My daughter bought this game a while ago and when I first saw it I must admit I wasn't impressed.
I didn't know what to make of the Katamari Damacy - style graphics where everything is 'squared', and from what I could tell there wasn't much structure to the game in terms of clearly defined goals or a linear path to follow as we see in most other games.
Only when I got curious one day and started playing it myself did I realize what it's all about.
The lack of linear structure is one of the greatest things about it - it's literally a different game every time you play, with infinite different worlds that can be created and explored.
Large, sprawling worlds that take somewhere close to 400 hours to circumnavigate, giving the player lots of area to explore and materials to craft items with.
You can play the game with or without hostile mobs {the monsters of the game}, with or without Non - player created {NPC} villages and mines, and you can even change the difficulty level on - the - fly, mid - game.
As DB has stated, the game is still being improved and very soon there will be a further update which will expand the normal world parameters and increase the scope of the game, as well as introducing some new elements and characters.
The Nether {an alternate dimension within the game accessed by building a special Portal to it} is going to be expanded greatly with new hostile mobs being added and also some 'Nether NPC' buildings, which I can't wait to get a look at personally.
In case you haven't seen MC before, I recommend watching some videos on youtube to get an idea of what the game is like.
For those of you who are broke right now but are still thinking of buying a new game when you can, I highly recommend spending the $20 on MC - it really is one of the best games I ever played.

Well isn't it true they're making yet another version to download? Don't want my PC to be filled with bloat.
Sorry to hear about your PC.
Mobile? I'd assume so with the popularity. Sadly besides texting I don't have internet on mine.

The game is in Beta so yes there are new versions to download from time to time. But that doesn't mean you have to redownload the whole game or anything big like that, it's just a patch.
Btw they plan on making a 360 version so maybe they'll do a PS3 one as well. Mobile seems like it would suck anyways.

Way trends are going and I can find a nonbricked cheap 360 might look into getting it. Obviously way down the totem pole for a 360.

I'm still on the fence, the main reason I haven't bought it, and the main reason I want to buy it are the same: I would like it alot. I try to steer clear of games that have no end because I value my time, as lame as that sounds.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
NOOOOOO! THE HYPE POLICE ARE COMING TO GET MEEEEEE! No really I've been trying to let the hype settle since Infiniminer but no such luck. It's everywhere man. Even so I haven't gotten around to it due to these reasons.
(1) Incessant advertising that makes me question mindless drones of people. I never get a chance to settle in somewhere before we go straight to minecraft phase.
(2) This laptop won't run it. Granted I have another computer... in fact I was going to get around to after I moved again.
(3) Addicting and therefore possibly take over my life.
So please prettty please. I don't want to be in this situation again where it's me against an established group disconnected from the original idea of the site.
P.S. I really will get around to it in a few weeks but I make no promises!
I do not like to be cross.

It works, I've done it. I've also talked to him about it. He's in a secluded area where he can't find any I believe. If you're still looking, then look for a Prepaid Vanilla Mastercard or Visa. That is the brand I've used, then just set them up with paypal.

Does this mean you think Beta is a bad thing? Sure it's not perfect but it's pretty cool to be able to play the game while it's developed and fine tuned.

If you'd be willing to do that then just get the PC version. I can't see how any console port would compare.

I'm sure you could get them with a cheaper activation fee but either way it will cost something extra unfortunately.

You mean word of mouth right? Other than that I really haven't seen any official MC advertising. So to me it's just being talked about because it's so awesome.

There's no pressure to play this. You wouldn't be against anyone, we are just trying to get more people interested because the more the merrier.
@steven- It is very addicting but I find it's pretty easy to just log off and do something else. Maybe I'm weird though.

Re: To the people who don't play Minecraft
You disappoint me Joz. How can you not be the least bit interested in a game several of us are playing together and making like 700 posts about?
Here's a couple videos to show how it goes. Both are not up to date with the latest version though, but pretty close.
Basic overworld gameplay
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94HcXdpcJlI&feature=related]Minecraft Gameplay Episode 1 - The Basics - YouTube[/ame]
Caves
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9Ja3DkDRP0]Minecraft Gameplay - Subterranean Exploration - YouTube[/ame]
And yes the graphics are intentionally retro/low end. But it's deceptive. If you walk around you'll see awesome landscapes that rival new games like Oblivion(but not in graphics obviously).
