Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

Well, it was Hockey Night in Canada, and because the home team lost some hooligans decided to don their now - becoming - too - familiar black bandanas and lay waste to some Police cars, set fire to trash bins, break windows, and loot stores.

Downtown Vancouver ablaze after rioters run amok following Canuck Cup loss - Yahoo! News

I do not believe this is so much a Hockey issue as it is an issue of a problem I see growing in every major city of the North American Union.
It seems to me that no matter what the event, nor even whether the 'home' team wins or not, there always seems to be a group of people in black 'uniforms' there to stir up trouble.

In this instance, tear gas and flash - bangs were used to help Police disperse the crowd, but after seeing the pictures I wonder if even that was enough.

AS I understand it, they would not allow fire trucks to go downtown to extinguish the burning Police cars and other various fires until the crowd was gone, because they were afraid they could turn on the firefighters and set their trucks on fire as well ... and they cost 1 Million dollars each, apparently.

Your guys' thoughts on hooliganism?
Are they in your town too?

They did this before in 94 as well. Did they learn nothing in Vancouver

Watching the Canucks go down in flames was pure joy for me, watching the idiot segment of their fanbase lighting the city and cars on fire because they lost just makes me sad.

I remember seeing it on the news right after they lost Game 7 in the finals to the Rangers that year. They also kept mentioning Vancouver did this in 1994 while showing what was going on last night.

It started this year in the waning moments of the game(Boston was up 4-0) Drunken morons decide they just need to destroy crap to show their displeasure, and it just spread from there with people joining in.

I've heard unconfirmed reports of several people being stabbed and one person being pushed off an overpass and dying. Some are reporting 3 confirmed deaths.

I saw a picture of a guy in a Bruins jersey laying unconscious on the ground bleeding from the head

Re: Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

@JG- I was reading about this right after it happened and lots of people were saying that most of the vandals were not really set off by the results of the game, they just came to cause trouble. I believe that. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy though. I know people who just enjoy being destructive but they need a reason, like a mob scene after a sporting event. Real fans don't make their team look bad by destroying their hometown. That's just moronic.

Btw, who cares this much about hockey? It's not like Canada even lost either, isn't the Bruins like 90% Canadian dudes?

Re: Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

This was definitely caused by people who wanted to cause trouble. Who brings a Molotov Cocktail to watch a Hockey Game. The ones that started this wanted this to happen. They knew about 1994 and wanted a repeat.

Difference between now and 1994 is a lot more footage of the perpetrators of the crime which means many will be prosecuted I'm sure. Other than the boarded up stores they have already cleaned up the mess for the most part.

Re: Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

1994 'Vancouver Hockey Riot' {starts at 1:10}

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Il3UlV2ars]YouTube - ‪Stanley Cup Riot In Vancouver - 1994‬‏[/ame]

As the reporter says, the 'rioters' probably weren't even Hockey fans .. not that I'm trying to defend them or even Hockey {which I don't even like at all} but it's important because it enforces the point I'm trying to make:

Civil unrest is on the rise in the N.A.U., and it seems to be getting worse.
As I said earlier, it doesn't seem to matter what the situation at hand is, what the 'catalyst' is, and I firmly believe the rioting last night would have happened even if the Canucks had won.

This incident and others like it are the product of Alcohol + Testoterone in the air + young males who had the intention of starting trouble regardless of the outcome, and it escalates from there.
We've seen the same sort of action {albeit on a much smaller scale} at concerts here in town {Motley Crue, 198_ ? where buses were tipped over and lots of fights broke out} and it's the same story.

My only question is:
Why were the riot squad with their shields not called out this time?
Or are they only called out to beat up peaceful demonstrators nowadays? - but I digress ...

Lovely little bit of 'pop culture' they introduced sometime in the 70's - 80's through movies and TV.
My parents' shed got painted too - with the 'Van Halen' logo.
Quote:

I hope no one got hurt, and not to downplay the seriousness of your situation, but you just reminded me ...

We had a resident psychopath next door who would routinely stick a rifle out of the top floor window of his house and point it at the High School students across the street.
For some reason they always let him keep his rifle and they never took him away for very long - so my childhood is full of memories of the S.W.A.T. team crawling all over roofs of houses in the neighborhood to get a good angle on this guy; after a while it seemed almost routine, and there would sometimes be live ammo the cops dropped from their latest visit .. oh yeah, that's what it is to live next door to a psycho - not to mention this creep would threaten to 'sick' his doberman on me all the time - when I was like 6 or 7 years old, and because of him I grew up thinking all Greeks were monsters .... but I digress once more ...

DN:
Quote:

How do you know it was one of the students?
It could have been someone from outside who did that; once we had an old man do that in front of the school, and then the 'recess' buzzer rang and the kids came out to play .. and found this guy with his pants down squatting in the bushes, and they were like:

'HEY! Don't take a ____ in the bushes, old man. There's a toilet inside, you know!'

National news for certain.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some murders.
Perhaps now is a good time to point out that it doesn't take team sports to generate this kind of thing; one year during the annual 'Benson + Hedges' Fireworks display {as they were formerly known} at English Bay, there were some guys running around with machetes hacking people in the crowd at random - just to demonstrate the senselessness of some of these people in their desire for mayhem.
Who walks into a crowd with lots of children and starts cutting people up?
It's insane.

I agree in that there probably was no conspiracy here {for once} but when I went out to the store last night the shopkeeper said they thought the incident would inspire City Hall to raise taxes for more Police, to replace the burned cars, etc.

Re: Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

Hey ChrisP, I got a kick out of Mr. 'Come at me bro' too; he truly is a vicious, fearsome individual - in his own mind.
I noticed many of the videos showing other kids posing for pictures they obviously intended to post on the net to 'prove' how 'bad ass' they are, and it makes me wonder if the idea of others seeing them in those pictures inspired at least some of the vandalism in the first place.

This notion is reinforced by the Facebook and other network sites' postings and how the kids are bragging to each other about things they stole, Police they attacked, etc.
So ... where is the glory in this?
Maybe I'm just an old fart but I really don't get it, man.

It isn't like they had Dominique Strauss - Kahn and his I.M.F. Bankster cohorts or perhaps the Bilderberg Group on the ground, kicking them for their policies that are bankrupting the world.
These kids may think they're giving 'the Man' a black eye, but they aren't.
The one and only time they came anywhere close to that was when they went after the bank, but even that is meaningless in a global sense.

All they succeeded in doing was to create pretexts for de - Humanizing programs like Janet Napolitano's TSA 'grope squads' for upcoming public events {I picture her wringing her hands, watching the footage of the rioting with an evil grin on her face as she picks up the phone to call Stephen Harper} but now I'm starting to rant.

SC13:
Quote:
Hopfully this doesnt effect his future too much.
I think the future is probably one of the main causes of the riot in the first place, even though most of the rioters themselves probably don't understand exactly why that is.
Like I said there's a lot of pent - up aggression in people, especially the young.

I was young once too and yes I understand how hormones and energy can make you more likely to do wild stuff - that you facepalm while thinking about 20 years later ...

But that doesn't account for this apparent desire to be on the internet in front of smashed windows, burning cars, etc.
I think there's a bit more to it than that.
Socio - economic stuff.

Re: Hooliganism, Vandalism, and other nonsense

A group of 10-15 people come downtown with a backpack full of rocks/bricks/molotovs and balaclavas. Shortly before the game ends they begin to light cars on fire and break out pre-made signs that read "Riot 2011" It doesn't take much to sway around 500 weak minded followers fuelled by liquor and negativity from the loss to participate in varying degrees. Others try to tell off the rioters and fights break out. Out of the over 100,000 people who were down there, this half of one percentile is what the world media judges Vancouver and its hockey fans on.
