That's exactly what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure since as I said the thread hasn't been getting much lately.
This is also why I'm on the fence about it; I like the idea and that's why I put it to a vote.
By the way, the poll is not to determine the fate of the OHDTY thread.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
The problem with it is that it had gotten out of hand a few times, way the hell off topic, and several times mods said to keep it on topic, or the topic would be locked or something like that.
It may have only happened once, but I'm not entirely sure.
I like the idea of the thread, but I never thought much of it. Checked it from time to time, participated sometimes. I think it should go on though, no reason for it not to.

The only time it gets locked is around the middle of January by our lovable, cigar smoking super mod. I wonder why.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
I think it should stay open because birthdays matter to some people BUT I think people need to stop posting stupid one/two word posts, it's like spam but no one calls it that. Same goes for the dead celebs topic. Just typing Happy birthday or rip is not a good post. When several people do it consistently I feel it ruins the topic. If you have nothing more to say, don't post.

Yeah, it is basically spam, and it isn't at all a quality post, two words or something like that is worse than not posting at all.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
To be fair the birthday topic is slightly better since people do write more than HB, usually. That damn dead celeb topic is full of single word posts that add nothing to the topic. Why even post RIP? It's like people are picking and choosing who they want to rest in peace. It's weird.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
DB, aren't you guilty of 'hb' posts? It's the thought that counts same with mourning someone's death. RIP is honoring someone even if it's just that.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
Yeah I've typed my fair share of HB posts but I was doing it because I felt like people wanted to hear it. If you notice I started out with longer posts and as it dragged on and on they got smaller until I stopped altogether. If it means improving that topic I'd gladly delete any of my posts like that.
We've been through this before but just posting RIP is not honoring someone. Talking about their life or their impact on you is. Don't you wish that everyone who dies gets to rest in peace? Why would you need to say it for specific celebs?
Either way is it really asking a lot for people to just post more than one damn word or an acronym? Give these deaths some meaning and actually take the time to form a complete thought.

It's like beauty, in that it exists in the eye of the beholder.
Aren't there some people you don't wish to rest in peace?
I think a person would be dishonest if they said they didn't - we all hold opinions on whom we do or do not like, individually judged and sorted accordingly.
I'm not saying that I tend to think of people in general that way, but there are certain individuals whom I believe the collective of Humanity would be better off without.
It's like George Carlin said:
"After a funeral, sometimes you hear someone say:
'You know, I bet he's up there right now, smiling down at us.'
...Why is it we never hear people say:
'I bet he's down there right now, screaming up at us.'"

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
What if I don't want someone to rest in peace, and I'd rather they opened up their casket during a funeral and said "What's all the damn racket? Can't you see I'm trying to sleep!".
Seriously though, there are some people I'd rather not be dead.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
Yeah I was being too absolute but my point still stands. Generally everyone wishes the dead to RIP. It not needed and without any other words it's just spam really.
Btw, we don't exactly post the death of bad people and condemn them so this line of thought really is moot. The people we post about are generally good people and it's a given that we want them to rest in peace.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
I wish that all of the dead will rest in peace, as I don't think there is anything besides that after death, no heaven and no hell, just death, like a sleepless dream from which you never wake.

So, (serious question) if Larry died, wouldn't want us to say something like "I'm sorry DB, hope he RIP." and just say nothing about it? I think it shows you're thinking of them really. Just my opinion.

Yeah that would be ok. BUT that's not what I'm talking about. If you just said RIP about it I'd honestly probably rate you down and be mad because it would seem like you're just pretending to care to boost your post count. You may not be thinking that but giving so little effort over a death looks like you really don't care.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
You're obviously not getting mine. Typing just "RIP" is not the same as "I'm sorry DB, hope he RIP". One is a personal expression of compassion for a friend and the other is just lazy. I know you can type more than one word, so do it. It's not that hard, as you just proved a couple posts up.

Re: Oh Happy Day to You thread
No DB Is right theres a difference between - for example - Nate doggs death
(post 1 -)
RIP Nate Dogg
(Post 2 -)
RIP Nate dogg, Cant belive he died so young, I love his music I think it will live on for a very long time, boy could that guy sing! I remember hearing all the work he did with rappers like Dre and snoop thats when I 1st heard him. He will truly be missed.
Ok that wasnt too much of a good example,
but the point is "RIP" Is like your just saying it for no other reason but a post count or to "kind of" spam.
If Larry did die, how do you think DB would feel if someone he knew Text his mobile just saying -"RIP"?
Its not the same as -
"Hi Dude, sorry to hear about Larry, hope you and family are well and may Larry RIP x"
Theres a very big difference.
