The USA has been aiding Japan’s quake ravaged north with large deployments of troops, aircraft and carriers as part of “Operation Tomodachi,” and the extent of their efforts has earned the undying gratitude of Japanese in the affected regions and beyond.

Good to return the favor. I know that Japan, both publicly and privately, gave a bunch in aid following Hurricane Katrina.

Say what you will about the military, something they do that gets often overlooked is the amount they do in humanitarian aid. My father was in the Air Force for 30 years, mostly spent flying C-130's and C-5's, including director of operations during the Desert Storm and throughout the 90's. He said the missions that gave him the most pride was the organization and flying of humanitarian missions to Somalia and to the Baltic region during the Serbian/Bosnia war.

Yeah those people are just horrible, ignorant people. Most don't even seem to know the facts about Pearl Harbor. I'm willing to bet that the majority of PH vets would be ashamed to read those comments. Yeah they bombed us but we paid them back and then some. On top of that we forced them into an unconditional surrender and changed the country drastically from that point on. Some people shouldn't be allowed to express themselves.

I get mad every time I hear about Pearl Harbor, knowing that the whole thing was orchestrated and 'allowed' to happen.
They had the codes for Japanese Military high command - level communications, they knew the attack was coming, and even after patrol boats were attacked miles out of the harbor they still didn't issue the order to sound the alarm.
Commanding officers on duty that day have confirmed this on record, years after the fact.
They needed this attack to happen.

Uhhh...you are aware that unmanned drones are currently the most used asset for real time surveillance, not because of danger from fallout, but because it is incredibly cost effective. It is much cheaper to toss up a predator drone or a global hawk than an awacs

Be nice, of course I know that.
The situation has gotten worse since the explosion at the reactor '#3' - the one that burned the MOX fuel {with Plutonium} and so I think this may have something to do with it.
But of course you must be familiar already with radiation dangers through your knowledge of all the Depleted Uranium munitions they deployed in Desert Storm, right?

Doesn't it make sense that they may be killing two birds with one stone by sending in the drone, both economic and safety - wise?

Well it's probably because we can't currently make articulate robots? Big dog and others like it are on the cutting edge, it's not practical to use yet.

That video was done three years ago. I doubt it's able to do anything more than a tech demo in that time. Hopefully they at least got rid of that noise in the meantime.

Maybe you're right, but there are other ways of commanding the robot, such as umbilical cords to the control panel, infrared {may require LOS}, and sonic signals.
I don't know, maybe I'm just an Armchair General now, out of the loop and maybe not with the latest tech but still I feel as though something is being overlooked here.

My dad is in the Army and runs many trips to South America to inspect food facilities and do other public health inspections. On his first missions he would take some of our old toys, and make trips to isolated villages and he would give them away to the children there. He always says those are his favorite moments in the Army.
