Close calls
Anyone ever have those moments in games where you think you are going to die or mess up horribly, but somehow end up pulling it off? This is a thread for those kind of stories.
While I was playing New Vegas, I went into Vault 11. At the end of the vault, I heard

That was one of the coolest vaults I have seen. All the posters, and everything that led up to the chair. The story line behind that vault was great. Very good game.

I thought that vault was pretty fun, and I was expecting something to happen, but nothing like that.

Re: Close calls
Sadly I had that vault surprise ruined for me by reading the forums but it was still cool. Since I was prepared I had several pulse grenades ready and the room was a storm of blue electricity and then a silent pile of dead robots seconds later. It was glorious.
Btw even though I was ready for it the act of sitting in the chair makes your response time dulled. I took some serious damage and my grenades were tossed in the general direction of flames and lasers coming at me.

That's probable the whole point of it. The entire vault hints at it, but you're not sure what really happens until it does.

Re: Close calls
Oh I'm sure it is. I tried to spark the scene standing and it won't trigger. I tried to stand up during the film and nothing. It's a good plot device for sure and it follows along with the story of the vault. Pretty sad and interesting when you read all the notes.
Btw I have close calls in FPS games all the time. It's a normal thing in Shadowrun to be almost dead and still bluffing by charging at enemies and firing. If you turn your back and run they smell the blood in the water and gun you down. Sometimes it's so hectic I have to take a second to calm down and let my hands stop shaking when the smoke clears.
Other FPS games have similar moments but SR doesn't let you respawn until the round is over so it adds more weight to getting killed.

Re: Close calls
One close call my friend had in New Vegas was when he had to get out of vault 34 due to radiation. By the time he got out, he was at 990 rads. Death is at 1000 rads.

Re: Close calls
I'm playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and the final boss keeps owning me. I get to him again, no healing items, and the battle begins. It comes down to the point where if I hit him he dies, if he hits me I die.
He warps away to use his special attack, I know how to dodge it but for some reason I'm stuck on a pillar and the camera is not helping. At the very last possible second I get free, dodge the attack, and slash him in the face as he rematerializes.
Victory was mine after losing at least 15 times
Also, playing FFIX
Facing off against the final final boss(who pretty much comes out of nowhere). I'm lighting him up with trance attacks. All of a sudden he pulls the typical super spell FF bosses have out of his butt, kills 2 of my allies instantly and leaves only Zidane with 1HP, and a bunch of status ailments. Trance was worn off and all I had left to use was the standard attack. Lucky for me it actually killed him.

I had a very similar experience in that irradiated town near camp search light(I think?). I was fine with the radiation levels until I got into the fire station where the source of the problem was. Once inside I ran out of rad-X and the levels were killing me. I had just one room left to explore and I had to make a mad dash out of the building and fast travel before I died. When I went back all I got was a stupid unique fire ax that wasn't even strong. Close call and wasted time for nothing really.

Re: Close calls
I once went into that dark pitch black cave in pokemon blue/red without flash and actually made it through with one pokemon left alive at under 20 health.
also, pretty much just about any time I face an rpg boss since health of the boss is always a mystery.

When I won the battle with the final boss of Resident Evil 4 on Pro mode, I literally had nothing left in my inventory except for empty weapons.

Re: Close calls
Playing Super Meat Boy, I made it to the first world's boss. After failure upon failure, I decided to take a break.
When I got back, I beat it on the first try. I was both amazed and terrified. I quit playing that night to hold that sense of victory as long as I could.

Off topic: I never got why you need Flash for dark caves, can't you just bring a flashlight?
On topic: During my mastery of Super Metroid, I beat Ridley with about 50 health left.

I was 10, I was rushing through the game (ie: my pokemon were weak), and I seem to recall it being difficult for this reason, that and your entire screen is black the entire time. It may not be difficult if you leveled up right but even navigating through it was a bit difficult lol.

Re: Close calls
Oh, sonic & knuckles. Last few bosses were brutal, especially on a 360 controller... That and Timberwolf and I were racing to beat it for god knows what reason, so I'm not sure if the close call was both being at the last level close to the same spot or beating several bosses with not many lives but some saves at the starts of the zone (I won't lie lol). Timber won, but w/e.

Re: Close calls
I was playing Taloons last night
Retro Uprising - Arcade - Taloons Great Adventure Mystery Dungeon
when all the sudden I got stuck between a
 deranger
and a
 Lethal Armor.
I couldn't kill them both and live and I didn't have any items to help fight them. My only hope was to let them hit me until I was almost dead, use a medicinal herb and repeat. I used my last one and a couple hits before I was dead the Deranger finally used his special move, warp. I got moved to a safe spot and had plenty of time to recover. That was really close.
