How do I set up a wired peer to peer connection between two computers in my house?

Most common way would be to use a router, hub or switch.

A less common way would be to use a Crossover Network Cable. It looks like a normal network cable (patch cable) but is different.

I put the router in but the system didn't recognize it.

AD HOC NETWORK (wireless to wireless)

Or you can do it via the internet (if they can both access it) by setting up a VPN

Setting up a home network is really easy, however there is no reason for us to explain it as there are tons of tutorials on it.

P.S. Read your routers manual. You'll learn heaps of information.
