Final Fantasy XIV, worst Final Fantasy game of all time?

The Final Fantasy series is an iconic gaming franchise that spans almost 3 decades
with outstanding gameplay and jawdropping plots, but Final Fantasy XIV lacks all
of those and instead has broken gameplay with unreliable systems and bland
plotlines. But, is it the worst Final Fantasy game in history?

I've felt this way about all of them that are post 16 bit. (citation needed) At least that dude from the original FF is making The Last Story.

Don't believe all the hype SJB. I'd be willing to bet that just as many people feel FF8 is the worst FF of all time. FF14 hasn't been out that long and SE is still working out the bugs and adding content. It's trying to compete with WoW and all the other mmos out there. They may be wrong in their choices but the game is still in it's infancy and it's unfair to judge it yet.

FFVII was the first I played and I think it is probably one of my favourites. I still liked II (IV) and I probably the same but still I could care less after X.

I guess you're right, hopefully Square will fix things, but if they don't this game will take the cake.

It won't take the cake imo. From what little I've seen I already think it's miles better than FF10. I don't care how anyone tries to spin it that game was awful and they should be ashamed of themselves for making it. Making a sequel was just criminal.

FFX had it's problems like all of the games did. Being less memorable was inevitable, you can't really top what Final Fantasy had already done before the turn of the century.

But anyways, I think it was a mistake to make the game this quickly. Obviously people are not going to be satisfied with many games with poorer quality and over redundant ideas. The same can be said about films.

You do have a point that X had a lot to overcome with the history of FF. To be honest I haven't really liked FF since 9 anyways. Besides FF11 of course. Something about the direction their going in just doesn't do it for me.

You think it was too quick after their first MMO or their last game? Despite being numbered I think the timing has nothing to do with the main series. FF11 came out in 02(JP)/04(US) and it's way past it's prime. I quit a while ago and the game was already on a steady decline. The recent server mergers and lifting of the level cap was the nail in the coffin.

I'm starting to think that MMO's together are redundant, but did they really have to release a numbered final fantasy a year after the last? They could have at least marketed this as filler while they take some time to make a real XIV. In thirty years, if anyone looks back to the series, will they ask why two MMOs were so close together?

Think about what else Square Enix could have made instead of another MMO, they could have put people on making Final Fantasy V for the DS, or improving the Final Fantasy MMO they already have, or Hell, even make a Rock Band type game with Final Fantasy music! Wouldn't you want to play Dancing Mad on a plastic guitar?

Maybe I'm just largely unhappy how many times they are going to take this series in a disappointing direction, but out of all the things you want to see out of Final Fantasy, were any of them another MMO?

Actually I think it's smart of them to make a MMO again. The last one wasn't WoW successful but it was steady and it's still got a dedicated player base. To me it's a change of pace from the lame direction their normally going in with the metro sexual, two dimensional characters in single player games. If they just focus on the one market they'll be missing out on tons of money and a different group of fans.

Since when do the letters "XIV" resemble "VII", because VII is the worst.

I just couldn't get into the plot, I found only one or two characters even mildly interesting, the gameplay wasn't a step up from the last, like each of the previous FF games were.

The graphics were ugly, even for 3D on the PSone.

And Cloud's whining just pissed me off.

For the most part, I don't really like Post-VI Final Fantasy, Crisis Core was alright, and Dissidia was cool enough, but both were spin-offs and major departures from the normal series.

So what did you think of the actual gameplay? Besides not being as good as the last? I agree that nothing can really be what VI was, but why is there more reason to dislike VII then there is to dislike VIII or IX? I understand some people don't like VII, that's fine with me, but it seems like people really can't help themselves from making the same points over and over again when someone says "final fantasy".

Regardless, was there anything you had to say about Final Fantasy XIV specifically?

Regardless, was there anything you had to say about Final Fantasy XIV specifically?

About the gameplay: I thought the Materia system threw things off balance, and I didn't like the shift to only being allowed a party of three at any given time.

I have literally no opinion on XIV whatsoever, I have not seen gameplay footage, I have not read reviews, and I haven't heard anything on it other than people on /v/ whining about it, but nothing can get worse than VII.

I also didn't like VIII and X all that much.

I agree, it's one of those games that has had an injustice done to it by fans ironically trying to do it justice. Another concept you can apply to movies, I should say this relates to The Dark Night in a way.

So maybe I was a little quick to judge on the FFXIV thing, I have not seen any actual gameplay. Still, the concept of the thing is a disappointment to me, I'd like to see a Final Fantasy game that takes place in a world with cities similar to those in FFVII or FFVIII. A modern age, while still having that element of "fantasy". Actually, an MMO with that setting would be awesome.

I agree that it'd be cool to use the setting from a more modern era but the FF11 setting is still cool. It's kinda steam punk mixed with typical fantasy. I loved walking around the industrial city(Bastok) and seeing all the little details with moving gears and smoke stacks. That and Cid had an office there.

FF13 sucked pretty bad from what I understand. All flash and not enough substance. I'm sure some people will disagree but at least FF7 let you free roam and do fun stuff at your leisure.

My point is that FFVII seems much worse once you consider the fact that it is often held as the greatest RPG ever, and even the greatest game ever.

Well all I can say to that is don't pay attention to hype. I played FF7 and 8 without knowing about this big drama filled debate and I liked 7 and hated 8. To be fair I had high hopes for FF8 and it didn't live up to them. 9 was great though.
