Can't install anything (told my operating system is not supported)

I had insane battles with my computer after my friend downloaded a file with very malicious trojan programs attached... My computer got in a severe state of... Just completely being hopeless. I'd get error messages to reboot, the virus multiplied into 132 counts of infected files and any time I tried to reboot or restore it would prevent me by resetting my computer to prevent it.

Tails offered a program to help and it did nothing and the reboots kept persiting and I eventually found a recovery system at startup and restored my computer to factory settings.

I'm shocked at all this thing is still working but it is and it remains in a decent state with slower reactions to stuff. However, trying to redownload the stuff I originally had has proven insanely tedious and annoying.

My computer has reverted back to IE 5 and that won't do and I hate ie altogether. I tried downloading several versions of chrome that I had before and they all give me the message that my operating system is not compatable when the system requirements clearly state that my pc is compatable. Same thing happened when I tried to get IE 8 and IE 7. There is also a game file I redownloaded that crashes on login every time and does the "Not Responding" thing I hate..... It worked fine before.

I have noticed many other changes with my computer it's almost like running on my 98 laptop we have... I can now move icons on the desktop wherever I want now which I couldn't before.... The programs would all align as far left no matter what before.

I think I have an auto installed version of norton security 2004 now when I had AVG 9.0 before... Norton is being insanely annoying notifying me of scanning complete jibberish files all the time and asking to make exceptions or block 5 million programs all the time.

Few things I'd like to know:

- What the heck changed
- Why am I told my operating system is not compatable with everything all od a sudden? It's the same computer (only thing I've successfully installed is java)
- Can I have some sort of free good AV program to have for the moment? (please provide links)

All of this is confusing and I really don't want to use IE 5, lol. I had 7 before since 8 sucked.

Help! My controller also won't register in java score but I think it's always been that way and my IE crashes with arcade oc even though I did install it.

I'll let you know if I resolve any of these when I do but for now please answer my questions

(PC is Dell, Pentium IV, XP, 2003 model and it's always worked great)

Have you downloaded the service packs for XP yet? you should have at least SP2 for many of those things.

Edit: if it's discs then I don't still have them. I managed to find the MS office discs but nothing else.

That's just a normal option. The factory setting probably just has it set to free move as default. I forget where you access it, but you have bigger problems anyways.

You answered your own question, it's a very malicious program that got downloaded onto your PC. Until you remove it or disable it you'll never have that up and running well. Your anti virus catching all those problems is a really bad sign imo. I'm certainly no expert on the subject but it seems plainly obvious that you are infected and it's designed to survive and get worse. I suggest bringing it to a professional and letting them deal with it. Either that or just get a new PC and junk that one.

Btw did you try Firefox? I noticed you didn't mention it. I doubt it'll help considering how screwed you are but it's worth a try.

FF Never worked on this computer ever and it doesn't seem it ever will

DB. Not a trace of anything I had before still exists (I hope) and if it did I would not be able to start my computer in anything but safe mode and would have to bypass a bunch of error messages.

I want more of your system specs. How much RAM do you have?

That is incredibly weird. You should be able to move around your desktop icons in the first place.

Here's probably what happened:
- You removed part of the virus and it affected system 32 files.
- Then everything was corrupt and working weird so you did a system restore.
- System restore did not find some of the priority files and just restored without them.
- Then your computer became even more messed up.

Ultimate solution: Do a complete fresh reformat.

Ctrl + F11 on bootup, my computer is like new and nothing remains. Only problem is it's reverted to 2003 settings.

Uninstall Norton, it is bad cancer. Please do it immediately. My father had this on his laptop and couldn't get on the internet because Norton was firewall auto-blocking IE, AVG, and Chrome.

System restore wasn't working. I did recovery which completely deleted everything that ever existed on the computer after it was first booted up at home. Sounds familiar?

Ultimate solution: Do a complete fresh reformat.

Do I have to, I think the virus is gone or it would still be resetting and defending itself. Pretty sure nothing from before exists, I had to go to the fresh computer installs like it was new all over again.

You can get XP Service packs from Windows Update or directly from Microsoft's download page. I would install those ASAP as many programs will not install without them.

His other settings were probably on left align by default. I know I've had that as a preset before and I had to disable it. I don't get why people would want it controlling them and restricting them but I guess it's simpler.
