Forest side scroller?
I think it's for NES, but may be Master System. All I remember is that you side scroll and much of the time is in a forest where you can jump around higher and higher. At one point you can go above the forest and find secret passages. Sorry I don't remember anything else.

Thanks, that seems similar but I don't remember being a Ninja. And the forest is more densely packed with hidden doors and tricks to get to the top.

I think the forest side scrolling and secret passages were big clues. I considered Legend of Kage like DN but you didn't mention ninjas and there's no real secrets in the trees. Also, "the forest is more densely packed with hidden doors and tricks to get to the top" really gave it away in my mind.

Yeah, but sometimes you mix up the ideas of two forgotten games. I was just taking a shot at what seems to be surprisingly common.
