Re: What was the best era of video games?
I'm going with the late 80's and early to mid 90's. It was a time when games were getting really great and when something new came out you would really be surprised. All the wonder and amazement is gone now if you ask me. Now people expect things and get disappointed because of this or that. Back then you would love those horrible polygon characters and say "THIS IS THE BEST GRAPHICS EVER!!!"

You should put a poll Steven. Make it so it has at least two votes per person.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
Does this really qualify as a debate?
For me it would be the 1990s as a whole. From sprites to the crappy, low polygon count character models, that we looked at as amazing, and when a game didn't have to be about shooting aliens/communists in the face to sell. When the world of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was huge, so much to explore. When an RPG had to rely on story and gameplay, not graphics, to be fun. When you didn't have to see through the eyes of the character, and grind-intensive RPGs were still considered fun. When MGS was released and was so amazing, the way it created a believable world, with characters you got attached to. When games had to have personality, not just be a carbon copy of another game.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
Are we talking era, or console generation? You have got to remember that the 90's had the best of everything, NES and SMS were still popular, Genesis and SNES debuted, as well as PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, and N64, so unless you are going hardcore puriest and voting for Atari and the Coin-op box, it would probably win.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
The name of the thread is era, so I think I'll say it is the era.
But you forget: some people will vote for the 80s because this is pretty much the origin of gaming as it exists today, some people will vote for the 2000s also {maybe} because it has so many "beautiful" gray alien/communist first person shooters.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
I was going to put a poll, then my teacher came over to look at my work and everything got screwed up. When a mod gets a chance can this be added?
75-80
80-85
85-90
90-95
95-00
00-05
05-10
2 votes max please, and thanks be to whoever gets around to it.

I would say that every era has tons of great games, but for me personally I would have to go 85-90, this was a very special time for me. I would maybe pick 80-85 but I wasn't really old enough to rock the arcades, and I only scored my 2600 and c64 in 85 I think, so they kinda loose points because I wasn't enjoying them in real time. 90-95 was excellent, 95-00 was loosing some steam, dq 8 and 9 single handedly make 05-10 pretty decent.

Poll added. You can't limit the number of choices available. It's either one only or as many as you want.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
you know mario, sonic the hedgehog, and crash bandicoot are all great franchises but theres a thing i don't understand. i know that sega saturn wasn't much a hit as playstation was but sega's 2nd attempt for was sega dremcast and i wonder why was sega dreamcast was short lived
P.S.: i know that sony playstation is long lived. =)

Re: What was the best era of video games?
I agree with DB I liked the nineties as a whole and not just a specific part of it, I'm glad this is multiple choice otherwise Id' be torn between early 90's and late 90's.

The PS1 was just insanely good timing on the part of sony. All people and stores were sick of sega with the whole CD/32X/CDZ/Neptune all in the same few years that it was confusing and stupid. My best guess is that people steered away in confusion and all-out being pissed off.
Then saturn was released 6 months before it's scheduled date which made it more of a disaster since all the add-on crap for the genesis was still new-ish and it was a big overloaded mess. Gamers were offered a console from a company they like for their decent quality Tv's and electronics (I still think Panasonic is Waaay better imo). It seemed glamorous and simple.
It's nothing wrong with the saturn as much as it is with segas bad marketting, however the saturn was a hit in japan like it could have been here.
The Dreamcast was killed by a DVD player imo. I can't count how many times I heard store clerks reffering the ps2 to parents solely based on the fact that it was on par with the competition and it was a dvd player. This and the dreamcast was put out to fans only to have a sequel to everyones precious ps1 being dangled in their face.
I still side with sega but theres not much you can do. Sega had great consoles imo and sony has decent consoles imo, but sony basically capitalized on every golden moment that sega handed to them.

Wow you need to drop the Sega obsession. You just left Nintendo out of a discussion about the PS1 and claimed Sega was important in the equation? Really?

Re: What was the best era of video games?
I believe 91 through 1995 was a great era for both Sega and Nintendo. Sega released Sonic and the Genesis while Nintendo introduced the Super Nintendo and one of the best RPGs they had at that time: Chrono Trigger

Re: What was the best era of video games?
it's quite obvious that the n64 was like 2 years behind the ps1, obviously not in production before the ps1 meaning an even better opportunity.

This was directed towards the GC and Xbox namely.
Sheesh, DB. I thought I was fair in my explanation. Every opinionated thing had imo and I said that sega has horrible marketing, which they do. How's that ubsession?
Take a breather, I was explaining why the saturn and dreamcast failed. The N64 didn't play that big of a role compared to the ps1, the n64 beat the saturn in sales and that's about all there is to it. Nintendo was already in the competition before hand(I mean snes, nes). Also, I love the n64 more than I do the saturn or dreamcast, stop hating because I forgot one thing.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
Sure whatever you say. You make the implication that Sony got lucky because of Sega and you totally forget to even mention Nintendo? Sorry but that seems like obsessive fanboy crap to me.

I like DC too but it really didn't have that many good games compared to other systems, imo of course.

Maybe your obsession is shown by the fact that DB stating it existed sent you into a rage where the word "obsession" became too difficult to spell?
Just kidding.
The real reason is the fact that you said that the PS2 only did better because it had a DVD player. Never mind the better selection of titles and the fact that it was more powerful than the Dreamcast.

It may be true but it's the way he says it that's bothering me. Sony might've been lucky but that's certainly not the only reason it succeeded. Cam is unable to give Sony or the Playstations any credit and it's getting old. Saturn and DC failed and PS1 and 2 didn't, end of story.

I say '91 to '95 because the SNES just never gets old, even almost 20 years later i can still play the games over and over and still have fun.

That was my intent, to provide a history of important events
Sure Sony had good marketing. I said that, sega didn't have good marketing. Sony had lots of support on the ps2 by third parties because it sold so well along with the fact that it had a DVD player. I still hear clerks suggesting the PS3 today for the dvd player and blu ray player. I was pointing out that this plays a role, especially back then. I'm trying to be as unbiased as I can.

Re: What was the best era of video games?
I voted for the 90's, mainly for nostalgic reasons.
Please note that I mean all games consoles and arcade/ coin - op as well.
I say: get a hold of as many different consoles as you can and enjoy them all, because that's what it's all about.
The one with the most games when they die wins.
