Trying to put the brakes on piracy

I just ran across this story while I was browsing the interwebs and thought I would post it here to see what your thoughts are.

There is a movement to punish ISPs on file sharing/ content sharing of all kinds (music, movies, shows, apps, etc)

New regulations looking to punish ISPs for users stealing content | Japanator.com: anime news, original features, and weird stories from Japan, updated daily!

Its relevent to the site where I found it from due to the fact that most US anime watchers will download a show but never go out and buy thus hurting the industry.

I guess the theroy is that if you put pressure on the source (ISP) then they can curve the illegal sharing of copy written materials.

The reason Im posting this hear is due to the fact that all of these games we play are copy written. ISPs can check for content on sites and if they feel it breaks a law they can take it down.

Do you think this is a good way to handle this situation? OR will this prompt even more inovative ways to share information and not have to pay for content?

It doesn't deal with websites. It is for P2P sharing. BitTorrents. Home users.

Websites like RU, YouTube and any other website are handled under [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA]Digital Millennium Copyright Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] which works pretty well. If a copyright owner wants their files removed from a website they send an email to the web host and the files are removed. If they are not removed then they can sue the web host and web site. If you request files to be removed but do not own the copyright then the website can sue you. Simple, effective.

This new law is saying if your ISP (Comcast, AT&T, AOL, the company that gives you Internet access) thinks you are sharing copyrighted files then they legally have to cancel your account. If they do not then they can be sued.

People always find ways around these types of things. It is stupid and will accomplish nothing except further alienating of their customers and billions spent on lobbying and lawsuits.

Modern publishers (movies, books, music, games, news, tv) will eventually eventually die and be replaced with a new bread of publisher that works with the new system instead of trying to fight it. I do think the current publishers will die and be replaced and not learn and change.

Unfortunately the first generation of replacements will be funded by product placement and it will get very sneaky and insidious. And it will probably be around for the rest of my life. Anyone notice the product placement in Talladega Nights? Watch it again and look for all of the commercials inside the movie. That is what the future will look like.

Did you hear about Obama ads in Madden games? They literally bought ad space on the jumbotron or w/e so when you're playing it's in the background. Some people were pissed but the issue blew over pretty quick.
