Best Horror Game Influence

I'm wondering which early horror game was most important, and I have four in mind.

Halloween-Probably the first game in it's genre, it made the concept of a killer chasing the helpless protagonist seen in horror films come to games.

Sweet Home-Sweet Home had some very disturbing scenes, especially for an NES game, but also introduced the idea that if someone dies the ending will be altered.

Uninvited-I think this was the first game to have many different and inventive ways to die, instead of the same killed by an enemy thing, and also a good amount of puzzles and an exploration element.

Clock Tower-This game brought some all the previous elements together while still being fast paced, it also gave you limited ways to fight back the killer ussually forcing you to either run or hide, sometimes leaving things to hope or chance.

If you think there was anything I missed I'm sorry, but I think I got most of them.

I never played any of the older Survival Horrors,
but I've played Silent Hill and Resident Evil,
and THOSE are horror fests.

I heard it's really scary.
But I've never played it.

well castlevania trumps all those easily, of your list i like the uninvited the most, as far as influences go, chalk that up to movies and literature

I agree Castlevania doesn't count in this topic. It might be based on horror(dracula) but that's where the similarities end.

I voted for sweet home because it's the one I hear about the most. I never really got into these games though.

I've never played Halloween.

As for Uninvited, I believe it was just attempting to sponge off of Shadowgate's success. It wasn't really trying to be horrific itself but instead trying to supply a new setting for the very popular death scenes.

Sweet Home is an amazing game that's probably the direct ancestor to Resident Evil. While all of that is true, it wasn't scary, just frustratingly difficult.

Clock Tower prooved that cinematic tricks for horror movies could be used quite effectively in video games. Clock Tower was and still is a great survival horror. It gets my vote.

I still think tho that the best horror games ever are Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame 2. Those to this day still mess with my mind.

I figured Friday the 13th would've been on that list.

i was drinkin a little last night, and didnt realize that these were based on the genre and not the content. i retract my cv comment, but still liked uninvited the most, that game was awsome. i only ever played clock tower 2, and sweet home i played for about half an hour.

Friday the 13th can make your heart jump a little bit every now and then but I think that it was mostly a side scroller rather than a horror.

Hm. Well I chose OTHER because I was thinking of 3D Monster Maze. That may not be the BEST horror there is to date but it WILL jump you every other minute or so.

I think Shadowgate was one of the first games to really push the horror genre. I remember when it came out on PC back in the day it caused a huge stir with it's dark occult themes and somber tone.
