Sorry, because I don't understand something means I must mock it.
Let me know what part of hip hop is this:

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
Well isn't ICP's lyrics about blood, murder, chopping, etc? I mean don't get me wrong, I once was a fan and owned some of their albums. It kind of amazes me to see how far these guys went.... I practically remember these guys selling their cassette tape (that's not a typo either, I said cassette tape lol) out of minivans on Michigan Ave. in Detroit. From what I remember the music was of a very dark nature, but unique in it's own way at the same time.
I'm just saying, I give the guys props for making where they did, but don't you think their brand of music may influence certain juggalo's to act in certain ways?
That's my $0.02 for the day.

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
I hate ICP but I don't sweat the lyrics. They are kind of extreme and I find them totally stupid, but people hate on artists with violent lyrics when their own favorite artists are saying the same thing in different ways. I mean Johnny Cash "shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die." Why can't ICP.
And @Tenser, I don't think you are really not understanding this, I think you are just trying to get a rise, but just in case:
An ART crime (hip-hop): http://www.4elementz.com/uploads/alb...bzgbi5vuhn.jpg
A VANDALISM crime (hate filled, NOT hip-hop): http://www.bbc.co.uk/northamptonshir...affiti_270.jpg
It's not too hard to tell the difference.

Nah I really do understand the difference TMT, you're right. But unless you do it on your own property or get permission to do it on another person's property its still a crime. I do agree that it is an art form.
The part I am not understanding is how it is a part of hip-hop. I understand the two often have a mutual following and creative drawing pool but they're certainly not symbiotic by any means.

I think it is just a matter of coincidence. People who like to tag walls also like hip hop. Some of my friends used to be into this and I can tell you they never played country or heavy metal while doing it.

The same way certain fashion is part of hip hop, kangol hats and stuff like that. Hip hop isn't just a genre of music but also a "cultural movement." DJing, Emceeing, beatboxing, break dancing and graffiti are all associated with hip hop music and culture.

Way to reiterate exactly what you just quoted me as stating. Were you agreeing with me or did you just not bother to read the post you were responding to?

So wait, which spawned the other? Is the cultural movement reflective of the music or was the music popularized by the cultural movement?

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
It is possible that rap arose in the 1980s as a way for the Americans of African descent to counter the popularity of heavy medal that was created by the Americans of European descent.

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
That's up for debate. It is another popular opinion that Gil-Scott Heron's 1971 single "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was the first rap song. It's just him performing a poem over music.
And @Tenser, I don't really know which spawned what. I mean first there was DJing, then emcees started hyping up the crowd, then they started rapping. I don't know a lot about grafitti in hip hop so I don't know where it fits in. I just know that it does somewhere and sometime.

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
Gil-Scott Heron's a legend
but i wouldnt class him as rap
he is...like you said, talking over a beat/drums
most of his stuff dont even rhyme
though it still is poetry

Re: Rap and hip hop and why it's not good
I would say that grafitti is a culture in itself. I've know/n a heaping handful of graf artists and it seems like there was a wide array of musical diversity from one artist to another.

I would be more in line to agree with you. I don't think just because you're doing graffiti make you a part of the hip hop culture. I've been wrong before though.
