Hip-hop returning to form
I don't exactly know how many fans of hip-hop come to this forum, but I was talking to my sister today, and she said she heard some song on the radio she thought I would like. I said "A good rap song on the radio? Yeah right." So I came home and looked it up. It is called "Handlebars" by a band called the Flobots. It is a rap song with a message by a bunch of white dudes from Colorado. I am amazed it is getting radio play, but apparently it is getting a pretty good amount.
It certainly gives me hope...
Check it out.

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
I like that song. It's getting played on the pop station as well as the hard alternative station here. When you said the title, I knew it sounded familiar.

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
I can't remember the last time I heard a song I liked on the radio. It is a glorious day.
I am just unhappy with myself for not knowing these guys before this hit the radio, so that I could be one of those guys going "Yeah, but I knew about em before they got big."

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
These guys sound original and authentic, but I don't know how much credibility they'll get in the hip-hop world. I'm guessing that they came to mainstream radio via college radio stations, which isn't a bad thing, but not something a legitimate hip-hop act normally does. With the standard in hip-hop today being everything coming out of the South, I don't think these guys will make much of a blip on the map in that arena. For hip-hop to make a resurgence I think there needs to be some good stuff coming out of NYC again.
P.S.
I did like how they used the melody from "C.R.E.A.M." in the "Dare" song.

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
Bus Driver? No thanks.
When I first heard it, I was pretty into this ghetto-electronica hip-hop movement going on between stuff like Bus Driver, The Cool Kids, Spank Rock etc, but it got old quick for me, and I don't really like any of those acts very much anymore. When I do listen to them, it is in very limited doses.
I do like that Creator by Santogold a lot. You guys might know it as "that crazy electro song from the Bud Light with lime commercial".

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
Yeah I was skeptical at first but that song was pretty good. I've heard it before but never really listened to it.
I know people think he's not a serious musician but what about this one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw
I laugh everytime I watch that. But, it's because he's just so good at what he does. It's parody but it's so well done. Plus it's technically Hip Hop right?
This one is long but it's pretty awesome. I guess it's hip hop too since it's a parody of R Kellys stupid Trapped in the closet thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT060JGp9sQ&NR=1
I can relate to some of the stuff in this one.

Weird Al was here in Springfield on Monday. I was going to go but it totally slipped my mind, and then after it was over I went "OH NO! I MISSED WEIRD AL!"

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
you forgot Amish Paradise, lol, Weird Al is the only artist I really listen to in Hip-Hop(even though he's comedy, and unless Sir Mix-a-Lot count's I like Baby Got Back), but this song, is interesting? shall I say

Weird Al is talented, but his stuff isn't my thing. UHF was an awesome movie. Michael Richards (Kramer of Seinfeld fame) is hilarious in it.

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
Back to the flobots.
there is a group where I live that did a parody of handlebars called Roseville bars and they call them selves the blobots
I tried to find a video or mp3 but cant just yet it gets played on the radio here just about as much as the acctuall song [br] Posted on: July 30, 2008, 02:43:20 PM_________________________________________________ scottsdale bars
someone took the roseville bars words and made it scottsdale bars but kept everything else the same
the roseville bars was better because it sounded like the guy acctually made it in a studio not his room. it was higher quality but you will get the point.
or visa versa maybe someone out here change the scottsdale bars but either way its a parody and its funny.

Re: Hip-hop returning to form
I don't like rap either. I mean I use to. But I still like the classic rap. Back when rap was worth turning on. Now today's rap is awful. Todays rap just stinks. There is nothing to it. Back in the day rap had a great beat and the song's actually meant something. Now we have a bunch of rappers who can't even rap. Eminem is the only today rapper I would listen to. So I hate rap now. I can't stand it. But I will listen to that song later tho.

It's not "today's rap", it's today's radio rap. There is still a ton of awesome hip-hop out there, you just have to dig deep.
