Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

Options/suggestions:

Pinball:
1 - Alien Crush (seems better than Crue Ball);
2 - skip this genre (usually very long games! Or why not limit pinball games, like 1 hour or 1,5 hours maximum? Is it possible?);
3 - Crue Ball.

Sports:
1 - skip this genre (usually sports games have many random factors, or possibility to find easy patterns to repeat at get many "scores" in many games. Console sports games usually are very long games);
2 - Battle Flip Shot (Arcade);
3 - California Games (Genesis) (modes? all? scores?).

Run'N Jump:
1 - Magical Crystals (Arcade);
2 - Kid Chameleon (Genesis);
3 - Chiki Chiki Boys (Arcade).

Beat'em Ups:
1 - Battletoads (NES? Genesis?) (if ok, for speedrun);
2 - many Konami or Capcom games;
3 - Undercover Cops (Arcade).

Adventure:
1 - Flashback (Genesis) (don't know if the scoresystem is good).

Golden Era:
1 - I, Robot (Arcade) (don't allow warps);
2 - Ripoff (Arcade);
3 - Speed Coin (Arcade);
4 - Anteater (Arcade);
5 - Pole Position II (Arcade) (1st track)
6 - Zektor (Arcade);
7 - Robotron (Arcade).

Racing:
1 - Power Drift (Arcade);
2 - Pole Position II (Arcade) (1st track... It's for permafrostrick );
3 - Super Off Road (Arcade? MasterSystem?) (loops limit? 2 loops?).

Speedruns:
1 - Pitfall (Atari2600);
2 - Aero Fighters (SNES) (Time Attack, secret mode accessed by code);
3 - Adventure (Atari2600);
4 - Pitfall II (Arcade);
5 - Battletoads (NES? Genesis?) (if ok);
6 - The Lion King (Genesis? SNES?);
7 - Ghost'n Goblins (Arcade) (1 loop? 2 loops?).

Shmups w/ short time:
1 - Aero Fighters (SNES) (Time Attack, secret mode accessed by code);

Falling Blocks:
1 - Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Arcade);

These seems ok:
Paddle (Break Out) = Gunbarich - Arcade/Coin-Op
Fixed Shooter (Galaga) = Cosmo Gang the Video - Arcade/Coin-Op
Vs. Fighter (Street Fighter) = Double Dragon: Neo Geo - Arcade/Coin-Op

I'd avoid:
- Games that are Language dependent, like many RPGs and Quiz And Dragons.
- Long games;
- Lucky factor games.

Yeah, another game in the Devil's Crush family for sure.

Score system is good. The controls take a while to learn. Doesn't have the "arcade" feel of just pick up and instantly start playing.

3 - Speed Coin (Arcade);
Speed Coin has been in at least one contest before. Maybe more than one. Several players don't want to see it again.

I prefer to stay away from anything that requires a code.

1 - Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Arcade);
Was in last year's contest as well as a couple others.

That Final Soldier seems very good, despite doesn't show the time spent in the end, right? A similar game, with a xx'xx"xxx in the end, would be perfect.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

Quickly "voting":
- Beatemup: Undercovercops (2nd vote for Cad & Dino)
- VS: I'd prefer a SF game, but Double Dragon seems good for competition. So: 1st vote=DD, 2nd: SFEX (if it currently runs fine to everyone).
- Adv: Flashback.
Metal Slug is very good, but I think the fans of the game can crush the scores quickly (many secrets), not sure if it's good or bad for a year long competition.
See you!

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

New links.

Street Fighter EX 2 Plus - Arcade/Coin-Op I don't know anything about the scoring. Is it good? Bad?

My Vs Fighter vote = Metal Slug - Arcade/Coin-Op

Back ups.
Street Fighter EX - Arcade/Coin-Op
Street Fighter EX Plus - Arcade/Coin-Op
Street Fighter EX 2 - Arcade/Coin-Op
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Arcade/Coin-Op

Undercover Cops is a great solid game.
Shadow Force is a really interesting beat em up. It is Technos' (the company that invented the genre) final arcade game. It has 6 buttons (way more than any other similar game), a bunch of combos and special moves and you can morph into any enemy and use their abilities. I haven't played it enough to know if it is a solid game but that description sounds cool.
I have only played Battle Circuit for a few minutes but it looks really awesome.
Caddies and Dinos is hugely popular but I'm not a fan.

I don't think we can go wrong with any of those choices.

I am leaning towards throwing Flashback in but I'm nervous that it will be a mistake. If you are very anti-Flashback now is the time to say so.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

I vote for Arkista's Ring. Had a hell of a lot of fun when I was playing it, although I never did beat it. (I think I was playing it in Full Mode last year or so). I replayed all the games but Arkista's is still most fun to me.

Gets my vote too because it looks the most simple to play out of the three choices.

As for beat em up I trust TRB's opinion - he knows this genre very well.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

Flashback would be a mistake. As the person who nominated Arkista's Ring in the first place my vote is obvious.

My links were reversed. I am voting for SFEX2Plus and asking if Metal Slug's scoring is good or bad for comp?

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games

The SF EX series is too easy. I can get to the final boss on all of them with just button mashing while watching tv.

Replacing with Double Dragon Neo Geo.
