Cosmo Gang for the shooter. Galaga fans will like it. Risk reward players will like it. And it has powerups.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
How is Super Bishi Bashi a puzzle game?
Isn't Risky challenge pretty similar to New Zealand story?
Isn't Binary Land more of a puzzle game? The objective is to meet both characters together through some sort of maze.
I suggest:
Toypop
The Amazing Maze game

It wasn't supposed to be in there. Deleted.

Not at all. I think you are thinking of Risky Woods - Sega Genesis
It has a lot more puzzle to it than a typical Tetris clone though. Might should be replaced with something more standard like Monster Slider or Star Sweep - Arcade/Coin-Op

I think it fits in the same category as Pac Man. Navigate a maze collecting items while baddies chase you.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
For Binary Land you only need to collect keys and similar stuff. You're really just trying to guide the navis to the heart. Also, the enemies are pretty static most of the time, like all of the spiders.
How about adding Tower of Druaga - Coin-Op?

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
I second Stocker for a racing game but Wonder Boy came out in 86 and I'd really like to see a game from the Golden Age. How about Satan's Hollow - Arcade/Coin-Op. Dig Dug or Xevious would also be cool picks. RU has many versions of these two games. More options would be Gorf, Galaxian, DK, Robotron, Joust, Defender, Asteroids Deluxe, Time Pilot, Space Invaders, Galaga. So many cool games from that era to chose from.
Sports games are more difficult to come up with a good one for competition purposes but I'll try and come up with a suggestion.
For speed run, are you looking for something with an in game counter or just something that can be cleared and the ref will count frames?

Here's a sports game that at least has a scoring system other than biggest blowout. 10 Yard Fight - Arcade/Coin-Op - Score Board. I've never played this game before but I have heard of it.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
Speed Run. We will use the emulation time from Game Load to F12 Submission.
Should be a game that can be cleared in one session. Ideally around 30-60 minutes but that is flexible. Should offer a wide range run time depending on skills. Ideally most people can clear it but only a master can clear it fast.
Sports. I think a fast action team ball game would be best, such as Football, Soccer, Basketball. Ideally the score system is not the spread and the range of scores is great. Most sports games such as NBA Jam have a poor score system for competition.
Tecmo Super Bowl is biggest blowout score but I think it should be changed to total score or total yardage over a season. That would mean deleting existing scores, enabling SRAM and would make it a very long game. Would probably be 20 hours to submit one score.
Both of these are sport-like and have a real score systems. I think they are the best suggestions so far.
Blockbuster Competition 2: NBA Jam And Judge Dredd - Sega Genesis
Heavy Smash: Future Sports - Arcade/Coin-Op - Score Board
Run n Jump - I'm leaning towards Whizz - Super Nintendo or Ninja Kid 2 - Arcade/Coin-Op
Racing and Golden Age Arcade - You guys are on your own. Try to come to a consensus together. If there is no consensus then on Xmas day I will let the leaders of the 2013 contest choose games for these 2 categories. The Micro Machine games wont work. Poor score system.

I suggest Tecmo Bowl instead. I've beaten it myself multiple times (actually every system) and it takes about 3 hours.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
Tails you missed my point.
I was suggesting TSB for sports category, not Speed Run.
TSB scores are currently biggest blowout. I suggest we change it to most total score. I don't know about all versions but in at least Genesis that is across 3 seasons. It makes for a much more accurate score system but also an intensely long game. 3 seasons is probably over 50 hours. Too long for this contest. If one of the other ports is only one season then it might work for this.

I didn't. :P
What I mean is, to fully beat the "game/season" (there is only 1) it takes roughly 3 hours. Not saying speed run as speed run doesn't really matter here.

Arkista's Ring is perfect for speed running. That was a great idea, Konger.
I would second DBCooper's nomination of Gorf.

For Golden Age I suggest Super Pang or Bubble Bobble, I personally really enjoy both games. I really like panic mode on Super Pang.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
I'm pretty sure there is a glitch in one of the levels that makes it impossible to progress past a certain point.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
Personally I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES should be used as the speed run game. It's extremely challenging but well rewarded if you can beat it. It takes patience and understanding of the levels and their layout. No one, I repeat no one will beat it on their first try.
But as a challenging side scroller it is a lot of fun to blast your way through and beat the game.

Re: Choosing 2014 Gaming Champ Games
TMNT for NES is definitely not suited for speed running. It has a ton of randomization, including enemy spawns and item pickups. The worst part is the Technodrome boss, which has a random chance of appearing in one of several different locations in level 5. If it doesn't appear, you waste several minutes going somewhere else and hope it spawns there.
