FWIW, Despite my extreme dislike for the browser, Internet Explorer is the only one that seems to work for me. The current versions of Chrome and Firefox both are a no go on the site with joy2key for me.
Also of note...even in IE, I have to manually start the games before taking over with the controller(ex. in arcade titles, I have to coin up with space, start game with "Enter" before using the game pad. On NES the same is true...I have to start the game by pressing the "Enter" key which then allows me to use my gamepad after the start has been acknowledged).
The above is no bother though as I'm beyond content in being able to actually play after having the same difficulties you describe in Chrome and Firefox...
