Farming?

Quote:
  1. Do NOT abuse extra lives or extra continues. Anything that allows you to start an infinite or near infinite point loop or rewards you for playing badly is not accepted. If a game gives you an extra life every time you play a level, you may collect that extra life but you should only use it once. If you collect the same extra life multiple times then you would have lives remaining when you submit your score.
  2. Do NOT Farm, Grind or Leech. Do NOT repeatedly kill the same respawning enemies or repeatedly collect the same respawning treasure without naturally progressing through the game. If the game has a limit such as a timer that would prevent you from doing this for very long then you may break this rule.
Would these be exceptions to these rules:
-Infinite lives exploit with a shell on Super Mario; takes no time at all to get max lives.
-You about to beat the game, but your score isn't quite high enough to beat the High score and but farming at the end gives you that little extra boost, like on Mega Man or similar platformers?

If these arn't exception, what are if any (excluding the one mentioned in 2)?

This would not break the point farming rule as their is a timer.

However it does break the extra lives abuse rule.

That means you may use this trick to increase your score but you may only use the first extra life you receive from it.

If at any point your number of lives drops below where you would be if you had not used this trick then your submission would be invalid.

This is the same answer as above. If you beat the game you may leech points. But you may not use any extra men gained from point leeching.

Off the top of my head the only exception to extra life leeching is SRAM enabled.

The only exceptions to point leeching are timer, beating the game and SRAM enabled.

However when using the point leeching exceptions you need to be careful because you might accidentally start leeching lives when just trying for points.

Re: Farming?

So Im a bit confused, I can use the koopa trick in mario bros 1, until i get up to gaining lives. If I gain a life its fine, but then I'd have to stop gaining lives after that one, then its fine if i keep playing?

Say you have 1 life. you gain 2 from the shell thing. you lose one and keep playing. This is fine. You lose 2 and you keep playing. This is not okay. Every life after the first one doesn't count and will get you DQed.
If you did this same trick with a different shell afterwards, this would be okay but, again, only for the first life

Re: Farming?

Okay now i see what kong meant when he said "If at any point your number of lives drops below where you would be if you had not used this trick then your submission would be invalid." (I didnt quit get that the first time). So lets say im playing SMW. I know of a way you can get about 12+ lives in the forest of illusion level. Lets say im on my last life, I get 12 or what ever number of lives I get, this is fine, but as soon as I lose one of those lives, I have to quit, and submit my score there?

Correct.

Another example.

In SMB.
You have 3 lives.
You do the shell jump exploit to gain 50 lives.
You now have 53 lives.
You may only use 4 of those lives. The 3 originals + the first life you gained from turtle jumping.
You must submit before or immediately after your 4th death.
This is assuming these are your only lives. If you legitimately gained another life before the 4th death then you could use it too.

When doing tricks like that, you must think of them as point tricks not extra life tricks. And treat the game as if it never gave you the extra lives.

You can only do this for points because there is a timer. If there was not a timer then this would also be considered point leeching and be banned trick.

You can only use 1 gained life per trick per timer. So in this example to use two extra lives you would have to do this on two different levels. If you did it on two shells in the same level then you would only be allowed 1 extra life total.

Dieing to reset the timer is still considered the same initial timer. So you can not die, find new shell, get extra life, repeat.

Re: Farming?

I go through a level and continually get an easy life but I truely suck and I keep being brought back to the start of the level, or in the alternate case of this, I keep dying at a different part of the level.

I get the most lives possible using a "legiamate" method and keep dying at a hard level and rack up tons of points in the process, like going through the level and skip the check points, get points but die trying to fight the boss.

I keep going back to an easy level after I die on a hard level to get an item that makes the hard level signifigantly easier, for example New Super Mario Bros - 3DS, the final level is long and difficult but the first fireball part is made much easier when you get the item that turns you to stone.

Also, is it alright to keep retrying on a game like Game & Watch, or another instance that if I don't retry could I play a different mini-game and keep the high score for that?

Only the first life you got counts unless it was a different life. (think a Sonic stage that has 2 different lives in it. You get the first one, and that's it for that one. You die. Upon replaying the level you get the 2nd life that you missed. That one is fine, but only for that first time.)

I do believe that's allowed as that's how others have some of the highscores they have. lol

I have no idea how 'backtracking' works in terms of the rules. lol.

I'm very sure only your first game playthrough counts. if you want to play a different game hit F5 to reset and then play the different game.

If there's something I've said wrong here, please let me know. I'm trying to do my best to understand the rules as everyone else. lol.

Re: Farming?

Even if you honestly can't pass a level due to difficulty, you may NOT grab the same 1up again. Also, if you are able to gain a 1up from the points alone in a stage and you die be it intentional or insufficient skills, that will get you DQ.

Re: Farming?

No back tracking / level repeating unless there is something that limits the number of times you can do it.

The simple rule - if nothing is stopping you from doing it forever on an infinite loop, then don't do it.

Re: Farming?

What about for something like 3 Ninjas where you can go a very long time farming points and you are gaining lives (from collecting items, coins and pts) but your lives are very gradually decreasing from natual in-game mechanics like the timer, meaning theres a limit.

Re: Farming?

You can use one farmed life per timer.

Timer is not considered new just because you died. You have to reach a new timer such as from a new level.
