Atari Jaguar added to Retro Uprising

27 Atari Jaguar games added today. 13 playable in Score Mode. 25 in Full Mode. 11 playable in both.



There are some bugs. Several will not have sound, especially in Score Mode. Some will have minor graphic glitches. But they should all play.

Take a look at the controller above. It is horrendous. Probably the worse controller ever packaged with a console.

Not all, but some games require pressing buttons on the controller's num pad. There is a bug in Score Mode that causes the Jaguar Num Pad to not work. Meaning some games might not be fully playable in Score Mode. This will eventually be fixed but probably not until next year.

No Jaguar game requests. This is all of the Jaguar games that will be added.

The Jaguar was released in 1993 and designed to compete with SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx-16, and 3DO. But a year later it was competing with Saturn and PlayStation and another year later the N64. Or rather it was trying to compete. It failed miserably causing Atari to completely abandon the console market.

Originally Atari planned to release two consoles near the same time. The 32 Bit Panther and the 64 Bit Jaguar. The Jaguar development was progressing so fast that they canceled the Panther.

The causes of the swift demise: Worst controller ever. Terrible pack-in game, Cybermorph. Insanely difficult to program causing many developers to shelve games half way through development or to never sign on in the first place. After an abysmal first Christmas the few developers on board jumped ship. Result, after a couple years the Jaguar library was still only 50 games and all but a handful were bottom of the barrel. Their key marketing idea was "Do The Math", SNES is 16 Bit, Jaguar is 64 Bit. However it wasn't long until the PlayStation was released and the math no longer added up in Atari's favor.

I'll do some mini-reviews. Positive reviews are in bold.

Alien vs Predator Pretty cool if you enjoy Doom-like games. I do not.
Bubsy: Fractured Furry Tails Played for a second. Bright colors. First level is a very boring platformer. Decent graphics.
Cannon Fodder Interesting and unique army shooter. Jaguar is the best port.
Checkered Flag Horrible racing game.
Doom Good version of classic Doom.
Double Dragon 5 Horrible fighting game.
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story I only played the first level. I'll play it a few more times before deciding if I like it or not.
Evolution: Dino Dudes Disabled. Num pad bug makes it unplayable.
Fever Pitch Soccer Generic soccer game. You get to kick people. If you like soccer then you will probably like it.
Flashback Great game but looks equal to the 16 bit versions.
I War Some kind of tank battle game. I have no idea what is going on. I can't tell if it is broken or not.
International Sensible Soccer Generic soccer game. If you like soccer ...
Missile Command 3D Interesting twist but I prefer the original.
Pinball Fantasies If you like video pinball give it a go. Bright colors. Sound is messed up. Had to disable score mode because of the num pad bug.
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure Platform run and jump. Pretty graphics. Jaguar is the best version of this game.
Power Drive Rally Crappy racing game.
Raiden Seems sluggish compared to other Raiden games.
Rayman Great graphics. Seems like the best port. Sound is broken.
Super Burnout Crappy racing game.
Syndicate Strategy game. Too complex for a mini-review. Looks interesting but I didn't know how to play. Compare to 16 Bit.
Tempest 2000 Rated as one of, if not the best Jaguar game. If you like the original then be sure to check it out.
Theme Park Graphics are superior to other versions.
Troy Aikman NFL Football Sequel to the Joe Montana Sports Talk Football series. If you like the originals then give it a try. But the originals weren't that good either.
Ultra Vortek Horrible Mortal Kombat clone. They should be embarrassed.
Val d'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding Horrible skiing game.
Wolfenstein 3D Best Wolfenstein game.
Zool 2 Best version of Zool. Great graphics. Fluid game play.

Wolfenstein makes the SNES version look horrible! Too bad it doesnt support a score mode

I'm not a Wolfenstein expert. I don't like the game or genre and have barely played. But from internet reviews and comparing it to the few minutes I have played other ports, it is supposed to be one of the best ports , including better than PC. To me, it looks to be identical to the 3DO port.

Compared to the PC version the mechanics, gameplay, levels, content are all largely unchanged. The graphics received a major overhaul which is the main difference and improvement. Sounds and music were improved. The status bar was replaced with numbers and icons giving a full screen view. 2 new guns. Auto map to see where you have been (stolen from SNES version). Score tracking was removed. Lives were replaced with continues.

Essentially it is the PC version with a graphics upgrade.

A rumor says iD wasn't planning to release this on the Jag but they were fooling around one weekend and completely ported the game in just a couple days so they went a head and packaged it up.

Brutal Sports Football A simple fast arcade action football game. No plays, line up, downs or much else that defines "football". More like a simplified version of rugby with lots of dive tackles, axes and bombs. Grab the ball and run for the goal.
Soccer Kid Platformer with a soccer ball as a weapon. Better graphics than the SNES Adventures Of Kid Kleets.
Worms Great game. Jaguar is the best version on the site.
Zero 5 Horrible 3D polygon space shooter.

That puts us at. 30 Atari Jaguar games added today. 15 playable in Score Mode. 25 in Full Mode.10 playable in both.

PS1 games play perfectly fine for me, which I find odd since 3ds games run choppy for me. but that'll be for a later day. They're much better (easier?) to emulate than N64 also. but yeah. Later day I imagine.

I think PS1 emulators are better than N64. Problem is their file size is much much larger.

I've decided I like this game. I don't expect many others will like it but I'd like to do battle for the high score.
