Zappa's more Experimental Rock than Prog. He' more like Tom Waits or
Captain Beefheart than Jethro Tull or King Crimson. He's in the top 10
Greatest Guitarists if you ask me, he could play the most ridiculous
notes, his live album "Shut Up and Play Your Guitar" shows Zappa's skill.

You can't really define his music, it has jazz, rock, doowop, classical,
it's a mix of everything essentially.

the cool thing about zappa is that when he wasnt touring or working on an album he wouldent play the guitar at all, so he technically had to relearn the guitar every time he made a new album

The even cooler thing is that guitar virtuoso Steve Vai first auditioned
to be Zappa's backing guitarist, and for Vai to get in, he'd have to play
a set of notes that Zappa was playing. When Steve Vai couldn't do it,
Zappa suggested he join Linda Ronstadt.

If anyone can outplay Steve Vai, they deserve a pat on the back because
that guy is absolutely ridiculous. Zappa even introduced the Wah-Wah Pedal
to Jimi Hendrix. Vai now plays with Zappa plays Zappa:
