re: Kinect
Modern Warfare 2 is the only fps I played, and the controls were fantastic. You move around with the thumbstick, and aim with the Wii-mote. It's by far my prefered control setup for fps's. You actuall get a sensation that you really are pointing a gun around.
I looked up a Kinect games list and it doesnt look good, the only 2 games that werent, stupid family games, were Forza 4, witch is a great series, but I'm curious as to how you are going to control your gas, break, and clutch, and Star Wars that was supposed to be out back in November and still isnt out yet, I'm guessing they are trying to push the limits of what we've seen already, and struggling to get it to a degree of acceptability.

re: Kinect
Now that you mention MW2 being on Wii I remember the commercials for it with the grown dude taking it way too seriously. Since I already own a 360 and a PC I never even considered the Wii as an option for FPS games. I guess this wasn't news to me but it was informative either way.
Btw for some reason I thought of that new goldeneye as controller only, must be nostalgia messing with me.

I've played the pack in game Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports.
In Kinect Adventures:
Rafting game: Your character is on a raft, you lean your body left and right to go down the course. You have to collect pins that are scattered about. You can also jump to jump your raft, there are jumps you can launch off to get on clouds in the sky.
Minecart game: Your character is on a minecart going through a course. The cart is not controlled. There are barriers that you must dodge. This involves jumping, ducking, going left and right to dodge things and collect things. Sometimes there are boost rails that come, you must act as if you grab them and then push off of them. That is kind of hard to explain without trying it.
Underwater tank game: You are in a glass box that is underwater. Fish and crabs and sharks and whatnot come and poke holes, and you must plug the leaks with your body. This one is one of the more exciting ones, it gets steadily harder, eventually to the point where you must also use your head to plug a hole. Flailing does not work because you must plug the hole for a brief time without unblocking it before it will get fixed. The space is fully 3D so you must move forward and back as well as side to side, especially when you plug holes in the floor with your feet.
Rallyball: You are in a long hallway that is filled with boxes. There is a dodgeball, and you must knock it into all of the boxes. Flailing doesn't work because physics is applied, the angle and strength that you hit the ball with affects its trajectory. Some boxes have more balls so you could be juggling six or more balls at once.
In Kinect Sports:
Track & Field: Stuff you would expect at the Olympics.
Javelin: Grab the javelin with either hand, then run in place. At the line you must toss. It is like a real toss, you must even unclench your hand. The game tracks the angle and strength of your throw pretty well. You can foul by crossing the line. If you don't let go at the right time during your throw you will end up throwing it straight at the ground.
Discus: Same as javelin, but you do it in place. You must spin your body to throw.
100M dash: Pretty basic, run in place.
Hurdle: More complex than the dash, you must also jump at the right moment. By raising the difficulty the opponents are much faster, and the area of the safe zone for jumping is decreased.
Long jump: Run in place until your character gets to the line, then jump. It is possible to foul, as I found out when going for the higher scores.
Bowling: Bowling. Grab the ball with either hand, walk forward, and roll. Spin and strength is applied. This one was a lot of fun and it seems really realistic. I was watching my brother, and sometimes he'd do the same mistakes he does at the real bowling alley (swing arm across body instead of going straight) and this was reflected in the game the same way. I was impressed.
Ping pong: This was my favorite mode, probably because I was playing against my mother. It was pretty badass. You hold the paddle with your hand, you can do backhands and strong swings.
Overall it was a lot of fun. As I said before this could be because of the novelty of the thing, it could fade away like Wii motion control did. Properly calibrated I thing it could be a blast at parties, my mom has had friends over to show it off. Granted, they weren't gamers so she beat them easily >_>;. But so it goes.

Re: Kinect
So I finally got to try Kinect and I was impressed. The fighting game was hard to get used to but it seemed ok even though it's a little limited. The impressed part comes from the pack in game Adventures and a couple others I got to try. Adventures worked awesome and some of the levels looked really good(water in the rafting level most notably).
Also awesome was when the game instantly recognized a second player and loaded up their profile, from scanning them when they walked into range and stood ready. This took all of 10 seconds or so and they were playing right along side me with their avatar. That was unexpected and really cool.
I didn't get a chance to check out the voice feature but I hear it's pretty innovative too.
So my review so far is a 10/10. Not fanboy bias this thing is the real deal. It's fun, it's responsive and it makes the Wii motion controls look like crap. This is the next step in motion control for sure. I can't wait to see if they use it's potential.
@Kong- The settings were most likely set badly or not at all when you demoed it. Your experience does not compare to mine and when I played the calibration was slightly off(we just set it up, fixed it later).

Yeah I'm calling BS on that steven. I see a bunch of games in development/TBA and nothing about it being discontinued. Actually I see lots of good reviews-
and this

10 million units of the Kinect sensor have been shipped as of March 9, 2011.[1] Having sold 8 million units in its first 60 days on the market, Kinect has claimed the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device".[107][18][19][20] According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, Kinect bundles accounted for about half of all Xbox 360 console sales in December 2010 and for more than two-thirds in February 2011.[108][109]

That seems like it's doing pretty well to me. I can't imagine the info would be so outdated on wiki and other websites.
The games I played weren't masterpieces but they worked very well and they were fun. I haven't played this nearly as much as Wii but I already like it a lot more. You guys may not believe me but I did go into this with low expectations and it won me over with it's awesomeness.
All the info is there if anyone is interested-

And that warrants a perfect 10/10 from you?
I just kinda assumed that they cut off support since there has been zero in the media, and no new games were comming out.
Of the 24 games released for it, 20 of them came out between the months of Oct.-Dec 2010, and only four games have been released since. Despite the Christmas rush this seems a little lopsided to me.
Just a thoery, but I think the developpers are having a hard time making games for it. Not only is it tough to make things work well with it (well bam there it is) but I think they are also scratching there heads for ideas that can use the motion controls, and be more than dinky little mini games.
I'm not gonna lie, I hate Microsoft, I think they have been way too influencial in how sorry the state of gaming is today. They don't care about ANYTHING besides making a buck. I will be very happy when they step away from games for good, with any luck, this will happen soon.

Re: Kinect
Well your speculation aside nothing indicates that Kinect is doing bad, right? I mean obviously the library of games is limited but if the Wii can pull it off then Microsoft will be fine.

I did say "so far", that allows me to tweak it as I play it more. But yeah for my first impression after playing it for a couple hours it's a 10. It worked great for not using any controller and so far I don't have any complaints. The early games are just like the early games for Wii, fun but also getting people used to the game mechanics. Can't complain about one and not the other really. I'll be trying more games soon I hope but I dunno when.

Well my point wasnt to say that the thing was a financial failure, I know it sold a boat load. My point was that Microsoft used this thing to try and steal a piece of the casual market. I don't think at any point were there intentions to make an excellent piece of hardware, the whole thing was jast a way of generating more revenue. They knew if the got it on Oprah, slapped it on home shopping network, gave away a half million of them, shut down times square for the launch party, and marketed the thing as some sort of miracle breakthrough in technology, then the people would buy it, and they did.
Also, I'd like to add that I'm not all that impressed with how the Wii turned out either, it has gone from one of my favorite Nintendo efforts to near the bottom of my list over the course of it's lifetime. At this point I don't think I will buy another console in my life to tell you the truth, the handheld scene is where it's at for me.

But isn't making a superior piece of hardware the best way to make the most money? Looks to me like they're raising the bar and the other two have to catch up or be left behind. Kinect isn't perfect but it's sure better than the motion control on Wii, without a doubt imo. It has voice activated control and it can listen for your voice in a crowded room. I mean really, this is an ambitious project.
This article has a interesting take on the situation. Looks like Microsoft has plans to expand this technology into pretty much everything. Sounds about right to me.
Kotaku, the Gamer?s Guide
Quote:
But Microsoft believes that the real potential for the voice recognition, motion-based technology is how they plan to use it with cell phones, computers and perhaps in the military and health industries.
"Think about a world where machines understand what people want from them," said Kinect Creative Director Kudo Tsunoda. "You can see that extrapolate out to a host of other devices."
|
Quote:
"I think that both with the gesture tech and the voice recognition there are so many different types of machines with some sort of input paradigm associated with them that this could be applied to," Tsunoda said. "Is it coming to the PC and mobile spaces? Sure, but anything with an input device, keypads or things you are punching numbers into, can use this.
"This is much bigger than something just for the mobile phone and PC."
I asked Kipman and Tsunoda if we would see this technology in computers, cell phones and cars in the next decade.
"If it takes a decade to get there I should fire myself today," Kipman responded.

After experimenting with motion controls I find I prefer a limited and small motion control scheme a la No More Heroes.
I'm not interested in standing up for the majority of my gaming nor do I have 15 feet of open space in front of my TV.
It's cool if that's what you like though.

Re: Kinect
@steven- could you be more negative? Is it that hard for you to give Microsoft any credit at all? You're starting to sound desperate to be honest.
@Tails- I'm not buying it, but I might borrow it. It's awesome technology but I don't wanna spend 150 bucks on it.
So far everyone seems to be reaching for anything to criticize Microsoft and Kinect so they're jumping on the space requirements. That's fine, if you also wanna heap that same criticism on the Wii. To actually use the Wii motion like it's intended you need the same amount of room. Just because you can cheat the system and sit and flick the wiimote doesn't make it less true.
Also the space requirement is actually misleading. You can set it up for a smaller room and the sensor will adjust accordingly. All you need is enough room to swing your arms, not that bad at all. If you can't make that much room in your living room than maybe you should get some therapy about that hoarding problem you have.

I am desperate, I want them out, asap. The longer they stick around the more damage they will do. They've already corrupted Sony to the point where the systems are basically the same thing. This is such a shame because of how great Sony was for the PSone and to a lesser extent PS2. I can't put all the blame on Microsoft obviously, they consumer is equally to blame, but 1 of 2 things needs to happen: Microsoft needs to start telling developpers "No, we want something different this time" or the consumer needs to tell Microsoft : "No, we want something different this time"
I understand that not everyone will agree with me, and the younger generation is probably oblivious to my perspective, but I really see the company as a cancer on gaming. I'd prefer if they would just stop, or better yet, turn their operation around and start taking a little pride in what they do.

Re: Kinect
Your hatred of Microsoft is pretty irrational. MS is just giving the customers what they want. If that happens to be mostly FPS games then so be it, that's reality. It seems obvious to me that the will of the customers dictates the trend in games but I guess we can just assume MS forced it on people for some reason.
It's not like they can go against the demand of their customers and make games you'd approve of instead of what sells millions consistently. Know what I'm saying?

If Sony emulated MS that's their problem. If I'm not mistaken the PS1 and 2 did awesome and Sony had tons of momentum going into the PS3. Why copy MS at that point? You're really reaching on this one.
You should just accept that MS is a part of the gaming world and will be for some time. They're no worse than other companies, they all want profit. There's no reason you can't be objective about it.
