Saturday afternoon Disney cartoons are just like the cereals they advertise at the commercial break:
Colorful, but empty.
The movies weren't much better.

I think he means it was mostly fluff with a tacked on message since it was Disney. Kinda like how GI Joe had all that tame violence but wrapped things up with a sappy moral lesson.

My major issues with western cartoons were/are:

1. Nearly all are episodic in nature. There's really no developing story arc. Anything that happens in one episode is so watered down because you know at the end deus ex machina will rule the day and the big, divine reset button will be pressed before the next episode.

2. Even if they are story driven, the shows carry on far too long. Three, five, seven seasons of thirty or so episodes each? There's no real pressure or time restraints to continually advance the plot in a meaningful way. Too much fluff and filler.

3. Repeats, repeats, repeats! Instead of trying to milk every last red cent out of a show why not let it end in a grand scale and move on to a new project?

Seriously, we got screwed as kids.

Yeah but when you were a kid did it matter to you? It did it's job of entertaining us. Have you seen any modern cartoons? The ones I've seen are much more fluff and annoying, but now with anime artwork!

Only because we really didn't know any better.

I have a seven year-old. Trust me, I've seen most of the modern cartoons.

As for Eastern influenced artwork, artistic styling doesn't really bother me as long as the show's entertaining. That would be like saying it's difficult to watch South Park because it looks like it was done with papercraft. We all know South Park doesn't suck because of it's art style, it sucks because the "comedy" comes in two flavors; predictable or trying too hard to shock.

So you must know that it's all the same. Kids generally get all simple crap with flashy colors and action. It seems like you're looking back and expecting too much because of what you know as an adult. We all know this stuff is crap, but it's our crap. It's yours too.

I was just making a comment about the current anime obsession. Seems like any show I see while flipping around is influenced by it. Not that it's really a bad thing but it's getting obnoxious. Maybe I'm only seeing the worst examples, I don't have any reason to watch them regularly atm.

I HATE! tv that does that. And I love tv that does the opposite. I was the same as a kid too.

I watched Tailspin nearly every day but I didn't like it much. I liked Duck Tails. Probably because I was younger when it was on.

I myself sort of chose the dark side after my youth but it's exactly what you just said that makes me dream of these simpler and innocent times that makes me love these cartoons to this day even if this was 20 years ago it's still solid to me though I know what you mean there was nothing deep about them but watching wildcat in these episodes will forever make me smile!

No thanks. I don't want it. I would find it very difficult to force myself to sit down and watch an old episode of He-Man or Funtastic Treasure Hunt again.

There's only a couple shows I could watch now but even then I would only be watching it for nostalgia. Usually the theme song is good enough though, takes a lot less time too.

In the current "cartoon" that I'm really enjoying, by episode nine 3/5 of the main cast have died. Only three episodes left for the series.

@Tails: I'll watch it when I get home. No speakers on the lab computer.

@Dudebro: That being said, even back when those shows were airing I knew what was wrong with them and why I didn't find them that interesting. I just wasn't aware that they could be and were being done differently elsewhere. Not that the knowledge would have helped me sans internet.
