Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
To the surprise of many, Nintendo’s E3 press conference catered to the hardcore gamer demographic arguably moreso than Sony or Microsoft. While the HD big dogs were busy courting the casual market that Nintendo already has locked down, Miyamoto & Co. showed off several titles that reminded the jaded gaming press why they love the industry in the first place.
Zelda was no big surprise...everyone knew that a new Wii installment was coming, and it’s a series that never really dropped off anyone’s radar. However, the company later revealed a rapid-fire assortment of upcoming titles that reminded everyone not only of beloved characters, but also classic gameplay. Donkey Kong Country Returns looks like a gorgeous new entry in the wildly popular SNES sidescrolling series. Kirby’s Epic Yarn gives everyone’s favorite puff ball an entirely new visual style while still maintaining its addictive 2D gameplay. Pit’s return may not resemble the 2D gameplay of the original NES title, but Kid Icarus Returns had no trouble hitting the right nostalgia strings.
Considering the praise Nintendo has been receiving coming out of E3, it only makes sense that they (and third-party developers) keep up with this tradition of giving adult gamers more of what they loved as kids, while simultaneously introducing a new generation to the gameplay traditions that us older gamers know and love. It’s not just Nintendo, either...Mortal Kombat and Twisted Metal are both hugely successful series from the 90s that made waves with their E3 appearances. Take a look at our picks for other classic games that deserve a modern day revival:

Those are for hardcore gamers? Zelda I can see but the others, really? I think they meant to say Nintendo catered to the nostalgia market.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Final Fight and Strider need new releases.
But I think they ran out of plot for Final Fight...

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Battletoads does need a revival, but at least it wasn't screwed up with an aweful 3D remake
like Final Fight. It was one of the worst games ever made.

SSX tricky 2 would be neat, the games became to realistic as it went on to SSX 3 and On tour

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
I hated the SSX games. All flash and over the top stupid characters. I thought 1080 was a much better game because it stuck to actually controlling your board and doing realistic tricks, sort of. Also SSX isn't even that old, why revive it when we have other better snowboarding games already being made?

The original Final Fight was about saving the city from crime, Epicly.
Now it's drowned out with steriod abusing Cody and his brother Kyle making
money through underground ring fights staged by Mike Haggar. Also, Guy decided
to abandon his ninja honor and became a gang leader.
How could they do that to three of Capcom's greatest characters?!?
You can tell they tried to make the gameplay like the old Final Fight games, but the
gameplay was flawed an often missed enemies.
The only good thing this game had was a poster with Dudley and Balrog fighting each other.

You have a unique perspective on game characters that's for sure. Haggar is awesome and well known but Guy and Cody, not so much. Those guys are not as notable as you may believe.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Guy and Cody were the ones to make into street fighter games, how can that make them less notable?

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Because most people don't really know who they are? Haggar is legendary but you don't see pics of those other guys piledriving great white sharks. I'm not saying they're obscure or anything but to call them three of capcoms greatest characters? I just don't see that.
They didn't even make the cut on SJBs poll-

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Funny how that list is shows a lot of the dumber Capcom characters.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
I didn't say I agree with it I just thought it was funny. I actually did a google search for "greatest capcom characters" and that RU topic was the second result and the only relevant one. Go RU.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
I think just the normal Metal Gear games need a revival.
No Solid, no Acid, nothing.
Just the same Metal Gear that got ported to the NES, it needs another sequel with similar gameplay.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
Okay, I'll do that.
Star Fox
Road Rash
SSX
Battletoads
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Metroid
Oddworld
Strider
Final Fight
Mutant League Football
I don't know if they are ranked by how cool they think it would be, or just listed off.

Re: Ten Franchises That Deserve A Revival
I was angry when I found out about Final Fight 3D the first time. I loved the original game. As for Mutant League Football, remaking that might be interesting.

I wouldn't touch that piece of junk with a ten-foot pole. Mutant League Football, on the other hand, i would love to see remade. I would love to play the remake.

I'm not too familiar with Strider, but that might change if they remade it.
