Gametrailers: Top 10 Most Difficult Games

There's no reason to play video games if there isn't a challenge to be met, but
some games kick up the difficulty to massive proportions and they keep us still
begging for more. But which are the 10 hardest of all time?

Personally, I think Castlevania III, not the original, was the hardest in the series.

That was a pretty lame list.

# 10 Contra NES: Contra III on SNES was harder.
# 9 Zelda II:
# 8 Castlevania: Castlevania III was harder.
# 7 Devil May Cry 3: No complaints there
# 6 Shinobi: Can't say anything because I've never even heard of this game.
# 5 Ikaruga: Really? There are tons of harder shooting games, Radiant Silvergun (also made by Treasure) is much much harder. R-Type? Gradius? Not to mention manic shooter games like Touhou? Seriously its like they've never played any shooting games at all.
# 4 F-Zero GX: A RACING game made the list. Lol.
# 3 Ninja Gaiden series: I don't think it's really fair to include an entire SERIES on the list.
# 2 G&G: Same as #3.
# 1 Battletoads: Seriously what is people's fascination with this game? It's really not that hard.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (the real one) should have made this list. Countless other games could have replaced some of these. The people who made this video need to play more games.

Battletoads is extremely hard if you play it for just one day but it is very fun and hopefully if you just spent $40 on a game you will play it for more than a week. After a little bit of practice it starts becoming very easy. Putting this in the #1 slot, I think, proves they did not play these games very much and aren't putting much effort into their lists at all.

Also this list is heavily NES slanted.

I would add
Flashback (without walk through)
Out of This World (without walk through)
The Immortal (without walk through)
Gain Ground (I don't think it is top 10 hard but harder than some on the list.)
Fatal Labyrinth, Dragon Crystal, Talloon's
Gauntlet (I've never played very far but it seemed long and difficult.)
Marble Madness
Rampart
Pirate's Gold

I bet I could beat Battletoads before Stuttering Craig could beat any of those.

i get battletoads, the difficulty is based on the two player co-op mode.

I think Ghouls and Ghosts should've been number 1. I can't think of a game more unforgiving that's considered mainstream.

The SMS version is my personal favorite but that is just nostalgia. The Arcade version is probably the best.

It is when it's harder than number 1. I'm not good at Battletoads but I trust the people here when they say it isn't that hard. Ghouls and Ghosts is just brutal and it expects you to play through twice to get an ending.

Battletoads isn't too hard, it isn't easy, but it's manageable, the only issue is that the difficulty level is based on a situation where there are two players.

Prinny: Can I really Be the Hero is much harder, those 1,000 lives can go quickly.

For the record, I beleive that had ghost and goblins been chosen for the last team marathon contest, our opinions of the #1 and #2 slots would be reversed.

I'm not implying Battletoads is an easy game. But if you played it everyday for a week I bet anyone of us could easily beat it. That is not true for 10 of the 11 games I listed above.

Sorry to break it to you but I used to play Ghouls and Ghosts a lot and I could barely get halfway through it.

Also you keep listing Pirates Gold when you mention hard games, I really don't think it's all that hard. Compared to Ghouls and Ghosts it's a cakewalk, imo.

I knew you'd say that. To be honest it's mainly apathy. I love the game but I usually get bored half way through it. Also when a game has a seemingly unbeatable score I lose interest. I say it's unbeatable because it seems to top out.

Btw guys I think this is one of the hardest games I've ever tried-
Retro Uprising - Arcade - Yolanda
I wasn't even sure if it was playable because it's so brutal.

@Kong- I found a game you might be interested in. It seems like Out of this World but I could be wrong. With a name like Weird Dreams who knows.

I disagree with Contra at #10 and Zelda 2 at #9. If anything, Zelda 2 shouldn't even be on the list, because it's much easier than Contra, in my opinion.

Ninja Gaiden isn't as hard as Ghouls and Ghosts.
But those respawning Falcons are annoying.
