Or how about this. Choose a series of games, say anywhere from 10-25 and give all of RU a whole year to post the best score. Whoever posts the most top scores by Dec 31st of next year in those games is the winner. That way everyone has a whole year to play the games. u can put in classics too that have infinite scores, like donkey kong, pac man, etc just to make it more prestigious lol. Or u can just scrap the idea. I enjoy this site a lot the way it is anyway. Nothing has to change. Maybe we should just keep it fun and friendly. I didn't mean to take anything away from the nominees by mentioning this, I just like the idea.

That is what I was thinking.
Have about 12 specially selected games. Most high scores on 12/31/12 wins.

Yeah, make sure you incorporate different genres and make sure that you can't max out the score easily or have to farm excessively to win. That way it's fair and balanced (unlike fox news) so no one has an edge.

Having a tie breaker scenario in place might help too should there be a tie. But u can always use most second places or thirds for that as well.
What about all the people who think they got a shot at it select a game? This would offer some variety, and also take into account what genres are most valued amongst the top players.
Nominations are now closed, with the exception of Most Underrated Gamer(which is now official). I'll give you until the 5th on that one, since we were undecided on it being official.

"My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer and I have my mind... and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge. That’s why I read so much, Jon Snow."
I think that a lot of the clasics should have a place, DK, Centipede, Robotron, Berserk, Pac-Man ect... Everyone should have at least some experience with them and they are imo the best games for measuring gaming ability.

Oh lord, I suck at those but I do agree. I like the idea of having some classics but it shouldn't be all or predominantly classics. We should have some shooters, beat-em-ups, puzzles, fighters, side scrollers etc. It also shouldn't have to be infinite score as long as a highest possible score isn't realistic or require farming. Or we can do best time if the score is tied. Or we could do several categories and have a best puzzle gamer, best classics gamer, and whoever has the most combined can be best overall gamer. That way even if u don't win best gamer u can win a sub-category. If I had to pick the games I like DK, DKJ, asteroids, centepede and pac-man for the classics even tho I stink at them. I like bubble bobble, bubble bobble 2, tetris, dr. mario, yoshi's cookie, smash tv, kung fu nes, contra nes (highest possible score with fastest time no code, no continues), tmnt turtles in time arcade, raiden or 1942 or some version of this type of shooter, at least 2. gradius or life force with neverending loops, no codes or continues. Just to name a few. All popular classics to some extent. All good tests of skills. I'd like to here more suggestions.

You have to be careful with some of these 80s games, a lot of them can be broken by patterns. At that point it's not skill so much as how long you can keep doing the same thing over and over.
Yeah, so why is it still so damn difficult to score big on pac man for me? The memorization of patterns and being able to execute them while being chased down after a 20 minute run seems very challenging to me.

No different than many other games from any other era.

The rules of the contest will be:
12 specific games are hand selected.
Game selection will be based on games that represent a varied play style and have lots of room for competition.
The person with the most high scores, set during the year 2012 Central Time, in those 12 games, will win.
Here are the games I am thinking so far. Play these before suggesting they be replaced by something else.
I think these are very good choices. Bank Panic » Coin Op - Classic arcade game that plays fast, has a big point spread, and is a good test of raw skill. Kid Chameleon » Genesis - I can't think of a platformer with a bigger point spread. King of Fighters '94 » Coin Op - Not many fighters have a bigger possible point spread.
I think these are pretty good choices. Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara » Coin Op If replaced it should be by a beat'em up with a large point spread. Donkey Kong » Coin Op I mainly choose this because of the popularity from King of Kong. I'm not a fan of the game. If it is replaced it should be with another golden age game like Pac-Man or Joust or Burger Time etc. Lode Runner 3: The Golden Labyrinth Almost never ending puzzle/action game. If replaced it can be by any game that is not similar to the other games already on this list. Bal Cube » Coin Op Never ending game that has a huge point spread. If replaced should be by block drop game like Tetris.
I'm not sure if these are good choices or if my personal bias is getting in the way. Taloons Great Adventure Mystery Dungeon » Super Nintendo If replaced it should be by a very long game that takes lots of time for a single play. Speed Attack! » Coin Op If replaced it can be by any game that is not similar to the other games already on this list. Rampartif replaced then should be by a puzzle or strategy game.
Complete guesses Raiden I don't play shooters. If replaced it should be by a scrolling shooter that can offer lots of competition. Road Rash 3 » Genesis I don't play racing games. If replaced it should be by a racing or sports game that can offer lots of competition.
I think Rampart is a good choice for puzzle. It's classic and unique. Taloon is good to represent a genre that is very overlooked. It's also a good test of skill imo.
