Hahah. So the latest I'm hearing on Marquart... bacne... apparently after his last fight he was told to get it cleared up by seeing a dermatologist. Apparently he did nothing and it got even worse, the commision took one look and said it was too un-sanitary to let him fight. I had some bacne in my prime, but that's gross none the less.
Sadly, MMA died for me. It's got steadily more boring as the years have gone by.
I watched a recent UFC show and was bored out of my mind. Good fights are few and far between. Too many wrestlers now dominate because they love to hug. And yes, you could argue that it's very skilled and I would have to agree, but it still bores me. I want to see two people stand up and fight.
Feel free to point me in the direction of some epic MMA fights, though, as there must be a few about.
I used to watch a lot of boxing but even thats gone down hill, especially the heavy weight division, although, I have been following Amir Khans career with some interest.
I dislike the heavyweight division. I'm more into the welter weight and below fights. More punches and the rounds last longer too. But anyways, this is the MMA thread so I'll stop talking about boxing.
UFC is wayyyyy better than it was years ago, the fights used to be guys laying on the ground hugging for like 15-20 minutes straight. You should have watched that last card on Sunday night, very exciting night of fights.
@Dman- Funny you say this today. After that last UFC event I was thinking how much cooler MMA is than Boxing. I've never been much of a boxing fan anyways but even so I just don't see how it can be more entertaining than MMA. I guess if you can't appreciate the ground game(it's not just hugging to get energy back, like a boxing clinch). Personally I love the battles on the ground because there's so much more skill involved. If you make a wrong move and give an opening then you're gonna get submitted. You won't see a guy put to sleep from a chokehold in boxing.

I realise there is a lot of skill when on the ground but if you're not a connoisseur of judo or wrestling, it gets pretty dull (on another note, I did enjoy the xbox game of MMA). Also, there is a whole lot more to the art of clinching, in boxing, than getting energy back and hugging and you will see it happen sometimes in MMA (I think the commentator loves to call it 'dirty boxing').
Boxing isn't what it used to be so I'm not surprised that MMA is taking over (taken over?) and more interesting to the masses. I think Forrest Griffin and Bonner(?) really put it on the map with that epic battle. I followed it all quite avidly around that time.
@steven - I'll check that out. I rememeber the Kongo guy from way back when I used to watch a lot of MMA.
I'm not that into judo, wrestling or any grappling really. My thing is full contact fighting. I hate how stuff like boxing artificially limits you so much. MMA is as close to real fighting as it's gonna get, at least for now. They have some limits but it's more about keeping it a competition and not a bar brawl. I wouldn't wanna see some dude win the belt by a nut kick or something, you know?
I don't know where you're going with the clinch thing but I am sure there's a hell of a lot more skill in a MMA clinch(ground or otherwise) than in boxing. Usually when one guy is holding the other it's because he's defending intelligently. If he lets the other guy go and he has a dominant position it's gonna be bad. Sometimes a dude will just be scared but even then it's awesome because you get to see the better fighter try to break free and rain down some pain.
Boxing hasn't even blipped my radar since Tyson stopped knocking people out. They need another beast like him to breath some life back into it. Either that or allow kicks or something amusing.
Here's some awesome submission highlights for you-

If you don't wanna watch it all here's some choice ones-
4:50 - Dude gets kicked in the face twice from a guy on ground, awesome. Then he lands right into an awesome leg choke.
6:00 - BJ Penn dominating some bloodied dude. He licks the blood off his gloves, for real.
6:51 - This guy is tough, he let his forearm snap and didn't submit, the ref had to stop it. If I recall right he was fighting the stoppage afterwards. Poor Tim Silvia, I think he's on this video 5 times getting submitted.

I'm merely stating that there is a lot more to a boxing clinch than what you suggested, "it's not just hugging to get energy back, like a boxing clinch" to quote you. I'm not trying to compare which sport is more skillful, either.
What you're describing in your comment is quite similar to a boxing clinch. They aren't holding strictly for a breather, they're holding to get better attacking or defensive positions. They're holding to do damage inside, like head butting, or rabbit punching, even kidney punching (or in Tyson's case, to bite somebody's ear off) by getting on the blind side of the ref. They could be holding to sap the other guys energy or get a breather. As you can see, there are a lot of reasons to clinch in boxing and I'm sure I've left a few out as I'm half asleep.
Cheers for the links.
I've actually seen a lott of that footage and there is some great stuff there!. It's only the last year or two I've stopped watching and before that I watched since nearly the start of UFC.
Anybody beaten Anderson Silva yet? That guy was light years ahead of everybody for a while.
My bad I wasn't trying to imply anything. My point is there's a lot more going on in a MMA clinch than a boxing one. I'm not saying that from a irrational fanboy stance either. I'm not discounting boxing really it's just the way I see it.
I think the problem is you don't see a lot of really skillful submission fighters recently so most people don't realize the potential of the style. Here's a good video that shows how skillful it can get. It's pretty amazing I think.

Nah I think Silva is still unbeaten besides that one loss from that jumping scissors years ago.
@Steven- Yeah but he also tested positive for increased levels of testosterone. I know it's possible that he had low testosterone but it's kinda unlikely for someone of his build and profession. The symptoms seem like something that would really hinder his performance and training. Fishy.
But either way I don't think Silvia is any better than other people at the top really. I think most of his current success is through intimidation. Going into a fight with a guy who is dominating everyone he faces with seemingly no effort must shake your confidence and effect your performance. Sonnen probably was so hopped up on hormones that he didn't care or notice.
@Dman- I'd say it's a combo of flexibility, adrenaline and the other guy being too exhausted to put enough pressure on it.
I'm not trying to slight the guys skills I'm just pointing out that there was a real issue post fight that seems to indicate that he took something to get an edge. I honestly have a hard time understanding how you can really regulate testosterone levels but I guess it's important or there wouldn't be rules about it. It also doesn't seem like he disclosed this medical condition prior to getting busted so there's that. He's also a convicted felon for fraud, kinda hurts his credibility right? Good fighter though. As far as competition goes I really don't care what the dudes record is, a fights a fight.
Also there's always this video

Silva is not immortal, he's just really good. I think his main advantage is his reflexes. Some people just have faster coordination and that's why he's routinely punking out slower(relatively) fighters. He's fun to watch for sure.
Btw I just watched that video a few times to really see the hold and damn is that brutal. Silva was in pain really fast and tapped without trying to fight it. He's got like three black belts so it's not a matter of skill. What a good move.
Damn I missed this. I just read that Wanderlei got broken in the first 30 seconds of the match? If so damn, probably time to retire. Such a shame he's one of my favorites.
Also Tito won?! I thought Faber had that in the bag.

Not gonna lie to you DB, it was a good one. The Wandy fight was just a slugfest, They could have fought 100 times and each one 50. I think Bader is over rated, he is close to being fired. Faber fought Cruz for the Bantam Weight title, 5 rounds of back and fourth exchanges, good fight and the decision really could have went to either of them, not a single round was decisive.
I think FOTN was Siver/Wineman, great battle with Wineman loosing it after hearing that he lost.
I thought it said the Silva fight was over in like 30 sec, now I see they meant there was only 27 seconds left. Well at least that's good I thought it was a really embarassing early knockout.
I'm not a huge fan of Bader either but I dislike Tito more. He was good back in the day but now he just seems like he's not into it or he's past his prime. He's also annoying and whiny.
I got confused because of Uriah Faber. He's a douche too but at least he's an awesome fighter. That unanimous decision loss must've hurt though.
Wineman lost his cool? Man I love seeing stuff like that of course I miss it. What did he do?
