View Full Version : The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time

Of all the games that inexplicably received the Nintendo Seal of Approval, these 20 stood out as the biggest mistakes. I don't know if the game making people were the nephews of the eccentric billionaire in charge of handing out the gold approval seals, or if Nintendo just didn't bother to check if the games sucked. All I know is that these 20 games are about as fun as swallowing bug-flavored glass. For each one, I'll give a brief description of exactly why it's bad then rate the Graphics and Fun on their own personal scale of one to 10. But you'll notice really fast that they all score horribly low, and these ratings are just excuses for me to make fun of more specific areas of the game.

Legend of kage

No love for Renegade Steven?

Yeah Renegade too I spose, I believe my quote from the other day was "surprisingly fun for such an overall crappy game"

Actually I used to to play m.u.s.c.l.e. (wrestle) more than most of the other games on 31 on 1.

So here's an updated list:

Mighty Bombjack
Athena
Giligan's Island
Legend of kage
Bad street brawler
Tag Team Pro wrestling
M.U.S.C.L.E
Renegade

I agree. I think it beats Kung Fu to be honest.

Really? That's interesting. I have a hard time playing Legend of Kage mainly because I find the graphics to be really really ugly and repetitive. I haven't played it all the way through, so maybe the game gets better.

I like Kung-Fu, but some of it may be nostalgia since it's one of the first NES games I ever played. I do think the NES version smokes the original arcade one.

In the poll, I voted for Bad Street Brawler as the worst game since it's general Pepto Bismol look makes me want to vomit.

Bible Adventures is horrible. The gameplay is generally unpleasant, the graphics were pretty bad, and I think that the Bible should be kept separate from gaming.

Good point. I double quoted the same quote didn't I?

Total Recall is the only game one the list that is impossible to complete without cheating due to bad programming so it gets my vote.

Deadly Towers and Athena are favorites of mine and I also like Legend of Kage, Super Pitfall, and Renegade.

I think that the Bible should be kept separate from gaming.

I think gaming should be allowed to approach any subject matter with any specific stance on that matter it wishes.

Agreed. Video games have become a media medium which should be afforded the same priviledges as film, television, print, internet, and radio. Nothing should taboo anymore.

Winnebagel
07-29-2010, 11:41 AM
I think gaming should be allowed to approach any subject matter with any specific stance on that matter it wishes.

I agree with that. I don't care if the game is based on Kung Fu Jesus beating up tax collectors, Budduh Rock (ala Chuck Rock only starring Budduh and his magical belly), or a basketball game starring Allah (Allah Oop anyone?). If the game is good I will play it. Censorship sucks in all forms.

Demon-Mask
07-29-2010, 04:29 PM
While I agree censorship sucks, I don't think parents should use video games to trick children into having a specific viewpoint on religion, politics or whatever.

Ah well, so long as a game is good, it really doesn't matter what it is about.

Kugyince
07-29-2010, 04:32 PM
Only misguided censorship "sucks". By misguided I mean censorship for the sake of censorship itself.

Demon-Mask
07-29-2010, 04:49 PM
Censorship for the sake of censorship is bull. Some things that get censored with a "legitimate reason" don't even make sense. You can say the word 'crap' on television, but not another word with the same meaning and the same connotation.

Kugyince
07-29-2010, 09:46 PM
You can say the word 'crap' on television, but not another word with the same meaning and the same connotation.

That's a good example as it encompasses both good and bad forms of censorship.

In some cases it is censored only to appease FCC regulations. The FCC regulating what may be broadcast on public and private airwaves is strictly a bad form of censorship.

In most cases though, such as cable television, it is done with an effort to cast the widest net available to attract viewers. This is censorship via consumer purchasing power and is a good form of censorship.

RU forums falls in the later form as we are censoring ourselves by choice to obtain a wider market rather than being mandated to do so.

Did you guys hear about this?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/14/business/media/14indecent.html
A federal appeals court said-
regulations barring the use of “fleeting expletives” on radio and television violated the First Amendment because they were vague and could inhibit free speech. The appeals court emphasized that it was not precluding federal regulation of broadcast standards. “We do not suggest that the F.C.C. could not create a constitutional policy,” the court said. “We hold only that the F.C.C.’s current policy fails constitutional scrutiny.”And from a first amendment scholar-
“This decision demands of the F.C.C. that it regulate with precision and not use general terms like ‘indecency,’ ”It seems that people are sick of the vague and arbitrary rules set up by the FCC. Maybe this will have an effect on games as well.

Why would any ever want to sound like that?

---------- Post added at 09:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:53 PM ----------

I'm pretty sure that even if the FCC standards change, there will be some degree of censorship, the kind Ten describes as good, the kind for the purpose of having a larger audience, not strict mandated censorship.

The FCC is too extreme about their rules though.

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The packaging (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Video_game_packaging) of Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing states that the objective of the game is for the player to "[...] deliver illegal cargo, with cops (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Police) chasing [them]"; however, in actuality, there are no police in the game or, seemingly, any objectives to complete.[1] (http://retrouprising.com/#cite_note-gamespot-0) The packaging also states that the player must "race trucks across the country (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/United_States_of_America)" while delivering such cargo; however, although computer-controlled opponent vehicles do indeed appear in the game, they have no artificial intelligence (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Artificial_intelligence), and never move from their starting position.[2] (http://retrouprising.com/#cite_note-VideoSift-1)
There are technically no obstacles for the player to negotiate in Big Rigs, as the truck may freely be driven on and off roads without any loss of traction, up or down 90° slopes with no loss or gain of speed, through structures such as buildings and trees (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Collision_detection), simply falling right through bridges (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Bridge), and even out of the boundaries of the map into an endless grey void. When the player's vehicle is put into reverse, it can accelerate indefinitely, but the truck will halt instantly when the reverse key is released.[3] (http://retrouprising.com/#cite_note-gamespot_video-2)
Though there appear to be five courses from which to choose, only four are playable. The fifth map, titled "Small Town Road", does not function and selecting it simply crashes (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Crash_(computing)) or quits the game.[1] (http://retrouprising.com/#cite_note-gamespot-0)
Upon completion of the race, the game displays a large three-handled trophy (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Trophy) and the now infamous text "YOU'RE WINNER !" [sic (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/Sic)][1] (http://retrouprising.com/#cite_note-gamespot-0) The game occasionally fails to distinguish between whether the player is starting or finishing the race when they pass through the starting point, and so this congratulatory screen may appear within seconds of starting a game, ending the race before it even begins.

It was my vote, this game was terrible. You would wander around rooms, endlessly, while fighting weird blobs of non descript pixels while getting your ears welded shut by the horribly repetitive soundtrack! :beat-up:

I've beaten Deadly Towers before.

Did you beat it on Retro Uprising? Get this....I actually wasted my money buying this little :poop: back in the day and I still was'nt able to beat it due to me endlessly wandering in circles! :bulgy-eyes:

If that is true, you have the patience of a god.

I hole heartedly concure with you SameJamesBond, Tenser you ARE the Deadly Towers terrorist! :terror:

Welcome SecretAgentCat. When I opened this topic and scrolled down the song "Secret Agent Man" was playing on tv. Understandably seeing your username freaked me out.

Btw Tenser isn't a terrorist he's a masochist.

No, I think it was on either EVG or onVGP.

It's not about difficulty, I just like the game. If you're enjoying a game you have a greater chance of beating it than someone who hates it.

I also like on this list:
Athena
Super Pitfall
Renegade
Chubbt Cherub
Legend of Kage
Heores of the Lance

I voted for Total Recall.

i voted other because Silver Surfer isn't in the list the game is friggen impossible. for one everything 1 hit kills you..and then there is the top down vertical scrolling levels which give you no space to maneuver let alone attack enemies..

I don't really think Bible Adventures and other bootleg games technically should be on the list. BARBIE was horrid, yet got the seal of approval :P

Thanks for the warm welcome:D. i commend anyone who beats Silver Surfer without help lol. another game which frustrated me as a kid and confounded logic and game playability was Dr.Jekyll and Hyde and as for Superman 64...
http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/175/889/oh%20god.pngoh god no!..lol though I've never played it (at the moment my pc can't handle the N-64 Emu)but I've seen reviews and game play..

I could be wrong but I believe Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is actually a broken game and that's what makes it so hard.

I love that pic, makes me smile. Don't worry about not being able to play Superman64, you aren't missing anything by just reading/watching videos. I played it when it first came out, a rental, and it was so bad it made me mad.

I went with Super Pitfall because I wanted that game to be so much more for some reason. I really don't think a lotof people would agree, it's just for me I was hoping for a more "super" upgrade to one of my fav Atari games.

@DB, I was trying to master here on R.U. awhile back for the lulz, I made it to the last stage, and died like 2o times. The gameplay basically boils down to trying to barrel your way through a stage and just cross your fingers, the last stage was too much to barrel through though. @Scratch, it is indeed a shame, Pitfall was an instant classic.

Anyone else experience problems with the site? It won't let me put a space between my @DB and my @Scratch.. plus spoilers don't seem to be working.

Whats wrong with Castlequest? Aside from the bad graphics, I find it to be decent game.

I can't believe you left out Castlequest!

Castlequest may be incredibly annoying and mediocre, but it's no Karate Champ. If the controls were a little bit better, it would be a solid game.

Kinda on topic...

It's one of those titles that's definitely not worth picking up, but does anyone else care for the Taboo the Sixth Sense OST? Personally I think it's one of the better ones on the NES.

Taboo: The Sixth Sense (NES) Soundtrack - Stereo - YouTube

Listen to some of that with headphones, gud stuff.

Shame the tunes were specialized for a crappy tarot card game though.

I would have to say Bible Adventures with X-men coming in second. I haven't played Bible Adventures but I don't really see the appeal as far as fun. This seems to be a niche market that didn't grow and as a game would seem to fall short. X-men was bad as far as playing the 4-player arcade game then expecting to see that level of action on the SNES version when it came out. It was a BIG let down, but I attempted to play it. It is bad.
