This here's a story all about how my fan stopped working and caused my hard drive to overheat. Long story short, was damaged in the windows partition. We backed up the files at a shop, and I'm on a new hard drive. All I took off the backup was Mp3 files and Mp4 because for those of you that don't know, I've been doing youtube lets plays for real this time for the last while, capture card and all.

I'm losing about 6 Yoshi's Story Episodes, 6 Kirby Superstar Episodes, and 4 Mario Party Episodes that I had in the backlog if I don't recover this right. Not something I really want to lose.

Alright, so in the backup the guy at the shop did, he got the files from my old hard drive onto an external drive, and we took what we wanted off there. Now here, we are, I got VLC and everything at home to run these files, and nothing shows up. The way the backup had worked was it sorted everything according to files. So I have 300 some MP4 and Mp3 files all labelled numerically... I try random videos, and VLC pops up but plays nothing.

So are these files corrupt? What do I do to get them to run again, if I can.

Edit: Yes, my fans fixed, no this didn't cost me much, and yes this is only bridging the gap for a few more months until I can upgrade my computer.

You're probably out of luck as the recovery most likely didn't get everything so you have bits empty data in the files where data should be.

I suppose you could try running chkdsk if you're on windows 7 but i doubt it will fix your issue. You could try mapping the new drive to a different letter and see if that helps. Otherwise, i think you'll have to bite the bullet on this one.

No major loss really. I'm only really using the computer for my lets plays at this point in time. Hurts to lose some footage for sure since I felt a lot of those episodes waiting to be released were getting a lot better.

I don't mind playing Yoshi's Story again, but Kirby I was doing a blind run of meaning, playing it all for the first time. Oh well. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

only other thing i can think of is when recovering files there should be folders with .chk you would then have to put those files back into their old directories (create them if you have to).

I really think you're SOL on this one. If windows media player or the classic version can't play it and repartitioning/changing drive letter doesn't help.

Maybe you could put a smaller file up and some of us can see if we can view it.

I sent an email out to someone who reached out to me already with some random files. We'll see what he comes up with. Thanks guys. Think I'm just going to start rerecording now. I already had the codec unclechicken, but thanks.

If I can somehow salvage these, at least in regards to the Yoshi's Story ones, I'll just upload them as bonus episodes.
