If you cheat then your entire team will be disqualified and you will not be allowed to compete in any future contests.

Each team captain must divide their team into 4 pairs and post those pairings here before 11PM EST, Thursday, September 23. Each team will have an odd man out that must sit on the bench and not play.

Your post will look something like this

John & Joe
Billy & Bob
Charles & David
Todd & Bret
Carl on bench

Replace the names with users from your team.

If you do not post that list by the deadline then bad unspeakable things will happen to your team.

The contest will start at the equinox, 11:09 PM EST, Wednesday, September 22.
Tenser and I will log into chat (http://retrouprising.com/chat/) at that time and start Round 1.
The website will randomly pick a score enabled non-Flash game.
Everyone in chat at that time will have a few minutes to debate if the randomly chosen game should be kept or replaced. Tenser and I will make the final decision.
A new game will only be chosen if the first random game is agreed to not be very competitive (lots of tied scores or just an endurance test), extremely boring, buggy or broken.
If we decide to replace the game then go back to step 3 and repeat until we accept a game.
Tenser or I will then post the selected game here.
Your team captain will have 24 hours from the time we post the game to post which pair from their team will compete this round.
Scores will only count if submitted by the pair that the team captain posts and after the captain posts the pair and before the round is over.
If you do not post a pair on time then the other 3 teams will pick your pair for you.
Pairs can not play again until all other pairs on their team have played. Each live pair on your team must get an equal number of rounds.
Each day Tenser or I or both will log into chat at a random time. We will roll a 4 sided die.
If the die is a 2, 3 or 4 then nothing happens. We go back to step 11.
If the die is a 1 then the current round is over.
When the round is over we will go to the score board and combine each pairs scores.
The team with the lowest combined score will bench their player with highest score.
The team with the second lowest combined score will bench their player with lowest score.
We start the next round and go back to step 3.
When your team has benched all members you are out.
Last team standing wins.

2 people will be benched every round even if there are only 2 or 3 teams left.
If a pair is broken up by benching a player then the remaining player must play by themselves. So instead of combining two scores it is just his score + zero. He can not be skipped and must play in the same number of rounds as your other pairs.
If a solo player survives a round or gets first place then they can call in a benched player.
If your team has two solo players then they can join as a new pair.

Quick question, you say we have until 11PM EST on Thu, Sept 23 to announce the teams, but the contest starts on Wed, Sept 22. Is this a typo or am I missing something here? Not a typo. You will know what the first game is for 24 hours before you have to have your pairings submitted.

But a round can randomly close at any time after 24 hours so waiting until the deadline might not be smart.

Do we all have to be in chat at the time the contest starts?Being in chat is not required but it does give you an advantage because the people in chat will have some influence over which game is selected - they will get to argue that the randomly selected game should be skipped or kept.

Seahawk

If a solo player does not get last or second to last place or if they get first place then they can call in a benched player.

So, getting second place wouldn't count? It'd be easier to write "If a solo player survives a round without getting eliminated..." for clarity.

Rule simplification:

If a solo player gets first place they may call back a member who was kicked off.

I reworded a rule

"If a solo player survives a round or gets first place then they can call in a benched player."

That means if there are 4 teams left then a solo player needs first or second place to call someone in. If there are 3 or less teams then the solo player needs first place. If there are only two left then both teams will lose a player but the first place team (if they are solo) will get to call someone else in to replace them.

We will start in about 9 and a half hours. Log into chat at 11:09 EST tonight to be part of the excitement! I added a new challenge feature to chat that selects a random game. To see it correctly you will need to go to the chat page and press Control + F5. That forces your browser to get the newest version of the page instead of using your browsers temp files.

Retro Uprising - Arcade - Detana!! Twinbee (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/1021/)

Ok. All Team Captains. You have until 11PM EST Tomorrow, Thursday, September 23 to post your 4 pairs + 1 bench.

Also by the same time you have to post the pair that will play round 1.

After that 24 hours is up, Tenser or I or both will randomly log into Chat once a day. We will roll a 4 sided dice. If it is a 1 then the round is over and only scores submitted during the round will count.

It may not have been clear before - for a score to count it must be submitted by the pair that is playing and it must be submitted after your captain posts which pair is playing and it must be submitted before the round is over. Only one pair per team per round.

Good Luck and Happy First Day of Autumn Everyone!

Making sure everyone understands the rules.

Rounds end at random times. It could end as early as 24 hours after I posted the game for this round, 11:20 PM tonight.

Scores do not count until after the captain post the pair that will play this round.

Therefor it is normally not in your best interest to wait until the last minute.

The rules are designed to discourage you from waiting until the deadlines are right on top of you.

It is bad strategy to wait.

Each round consists of
1. Randomly picking game.
2. Decide if we should pick a new random game or keep the one selected.
3. Post the selected game in this thread.
4. Start clock.
5. Post the pair that is playing this round.
6. After 24 hours we will roll a 4 sided die once a day at random times until that die is a 1.
7. When the die is a 1, the round is over.

Scores only count in between step 5 and 7. Step 6 will happen for the first time, sometime between 11:20 PM EST tonight and the 11:19PM EST tomorrow. You have a 1 in 4 chance of the round ending then.

Current score status for Round 1:

GOM (Tenser/Seahawk): 1,043,250 + 2,766,850 = 3,810,100
VB (wolfman24/Enemy Ace): 1,322,150 + 1,784,800 = 3,106,950
MM (Cameron36/fogelmir): 1,525,400 + 936,750 = 2,462,150
EC (david man45/TrakMastaTom): 715,100 + 435,500 = 1,150,600

Names in bold stand to be dropped if the round ends with no more score updates.

Kong
09-24-2010, 01:02 PM
@Joz, since you don't know when a round is going to be over, you always want to submit your highest score even if it just floods the board.

Kong rolls 1d4 and gets 4.Round continues.

I would like to point out, the rules say "Tenser, or I or Both will roll once a day". That means there can be 2 rolls per day. Especially if this starts to seem like it is dragging out for too long we will both roll each day.

What does everyone think about changing it from 1d4 to 1d3 or 1d2? Just to speed it up. If all four team captains agree to reducing it we will, otherwise it stays the same.

Seahawk
09-24-2010, 01:07 PM

24 hours after the game is posted, roll 1d4.
If the round continues, the next day roll 1d3.
Next day, 1d2.
If chance fails this long, then a compulsory end of the round. That way a round can't theoretically last forever. So the max length of a round is 96 hours (4 days).

CatalystiCam
09-24-2010, 01:10 PM
I think if you're going to do that then 1 die a day. 2 1d2's would be disastrous.

joz
09-24-2010, 01:14 PM
@cam: that would already be day three for the 1d2 die to be rolled. I think by then everyone would have had enough time to get used to the game and score as high as they ever will.

Kong
09-24-2010, 01:22 PM
@Seahawk, Joz had the same idea in chat, sounds good.

Here is another idea - if all 4 captains agree we can make this rule change. Otherwise we will not. This will let the teams have more strategy and control.

The team captains can roll the die instead of Tenser and Me.
Each team captain can choose to roll a 1d4 once per 24 hours - the first time being at least 24 hours after the round starts. If any one of the captains roll a 1 the round is over. They do not have to roll. Once a team is eliminated and there are only 3 teams left it will change to 1d3. When another team is eliminated and there are only 2 teams left it will be 1d2.

Unless 3rd or 4th place wanted to throw in the towel there would only be 2 rolls per day with this new rule - it is only good strategy for 1st and 2nd place to roll.

Also we should have a rule that if both 3rd and 4th want to end the round they can. No reason in playing if the only people that will be punished have accepted defeat and given up trying.

jim5cents
09-24-2010, 01:29 PM
I do not like the team captain rule. It gives a team an unfair advantage to post a high score, then immediately have a chance to end the round.

Part of the logic of having Kong or Ten roll is that way, the end of round would be a mystery.

Kugyince

I don't like this rule. If a pair gets an extremely high score then they have a chance to immediately end the round. Part of this contest is trying to get the high score, and having the chance to counter attack. This takes time. If someone in Detana beat my score it could take an hour to get it back. While I'm playing a captain could make the magic roll, wasting my effort. At least if Tenser and Kong rolls everyone shares the same chance of the round ending at any time. It adds to the suspense by making the end of the round a mystery.

I think the surrender rule is a good option.

tanc24
09-24-2010, 01:46 PM
I agree with Seahawk and 5cents. Kong and Tenser should control the roll.
I like the idea of a decreasing sided dice every 24 hours. 4 sided, then 3 sided, then 2 sided.
Surrender is fine, too.

What I don't understand is was this first round essentially wasted, or are davidman and fogelmir benched and two more people will soon be benched after this next 24 hours? Help, please. ???

Kong
09-24-2010, 01:47 PM
I thought the captain roll rule would make it more interesting - it is still random and uncertain - but each team has a chance to get together and organize and try to hammer a nail in. And any advantage or disadvantage it gives would be equal to all teams.

What I don't understand is was this first round essentially wasted, or are davidman and fogelmir benched and two more people will soon be benched after this next 24 hours? Help, please. ???A round is not over until a 1 is rolled. If scores do not change then they will be benched when a 1 is rolled.

If a team submits two zeros it is probably something done on purpose. I could understand one, but two seems a bit excessive. Why should a team that does this kind of thing be rewarded? I would think the other teams should choose who they lose to prevent these types of shenanigans.

Copy and pasted from page one:

If a solo player survives a round or gets first place then they can call in a benched player.

There seems to be a little confusion, wolfman a nd davidman are listed as "eliminated" is this different that "benched"?
Also, does submitting 1 score from a team of 2 count as solo? Like if one of the pair doesn't submit a score?

I wouldnt excatly call it "rewarded", they have two players that are not active, I don't see the harm in letting them selecting what one to bench, and what one stays, based on who they think is more likely to become active before the end of the contest.

Although last night in chat Ten suggested that they might both get benched.

I think I know what you are saying, but it does seem to be a forced loss in a round if there are two zeros. I think this kind of thing should not be encouraged is all I'm saying.

If someone manages to win a round all by them-self that is a big accomplishment and so someone combining with them in that case is a reward.

Losing on purpose is a different case I think. It would just seem to be unfair (to the player being dropped) and not really sportsmanlike in my opinion.

If someone loses a round on purpose just to drop a player and then re align with someone different (which is the only reason I can think of why someone would do this) it would just seem underhanded somehow. I can understand if someone is busy and can't submit a score, but both just seems like it is a tactic.

Benched and Eliminated players are different.

Your benched player can join a solo player team at any time.

An eliminated player requires a solo player to win to be called back.

Example: Davidman was eliminated on team EC leaving TMT a solo team. EC can merge their bench (Oasis) with TMT to create a team if they wish or leave TMT as a solo team.

Did we come to an agreement on changing the dice rule? My captain roll idea was vetoed right?

@Double zeros. If your partner is MIA and you submit any score and they submit a zero and you get last place then you are kicked off while your partner gets to stay.

That seems harsh, but that is how I intended the rules to be. The question being asked is if you know that is going to happen then can you submit a zero on purpose to avoid it.

I originally intended to say in case of tie both are benched. I forgot to put that in the rules, so I am asking for everyone opinion since it needs to be covered.

It might be better for the contest if we design it so we kick the dead weight off right away instead of rewarding the no shows. But I don't think that is in line with the original intent of the rules. So I am undecided.

@Eliminated, I had it in mind that players were benched each round and there was no difference in benched and eliminated and that for a benched player to be called in they would have to have a solo player survive a round. Dose everyone prefer what Tenser thought was the rule or what I thought?

I'm in the same boat. If you could do the solo thing and beat everyone else on your own and could then resurrect your team mate that would be cool. It wouldn't be cool to lose on purpose so you could bring in someone else.

Wow, I've missed a lot in the past few hours.

In regards to double zeros - If that happens I suggest you let the losing team make the decision of who gets eliminated. I don't see any strategy that would benefit from having two non-scores. The only way I see double zeroes happening is if you had two non-active teammates that had to fill slots.

In short, we should eliminate the dead weight first.

Regarding the eliminated/benched discussion. I have no opinion just yet because I don't fully understand the difference.

As for what is considered a "solo" score, only a one-person team should be counted as solo. Not a one person highest score and a zero. That kind of situation could bring underhanded strategy into play. My vote would be you have to be truly "solo" to bring back a player.

I could be wrong, but I am expecting a dice roll at any moment.

It may be hard to believe but yes I would.

I wasn't clear enough before, going into this I thought the only way to bring people back was a solo win which is difficult and deserving of a bonus. It's not impossible and I'm sure it's gonna happen a few times as the contest gets down to the end. The alternative just seems too easy, maybe I'm not understanding something. I was talking about eliminated not being the same as benched.

CatalystiCam

I don't think eliminated is the same as benched. This is how I understand the rules:

A benched player is in the contest, and when a participating player gets eliminated, the benched player can substitute in for that player. If that benched player goes on to be eliminated, they are then out of the contest.

An eliminated player is not in the contest. The only way they can come back is if someone on their team who's team mate has been eliminated and therefore they are the only submitting a score for the round, puts up a score that doesn't get them eliminated.

I am logging into chat now to roll the die.

@Double Zeros. My team thought we might have someone not show up. That would mean we would have to submit 1 zero and probably get last place. Since we had last place the person that didn't show up would be spared but the person that did submit would be benched. The reason for asking was so we could use the strategy of submitting two zeroes and kicking the no show off.

Unless someone disagrees, I am going to say the rule is what I originally meant to write but forgot to, If your team submits two zeros both people are benched.

Most of you seem to be confused and wrong about the benching rule.

The only way you can call an eliminated person back into the game is by a single person winning the right.

That is not changing.

Tenser thought the rule was that the very first person that was benched - the person that was never in a pair - could be combined with a solo person to make a new pair. That is not what I had in mind when I wrote the rules but since Tenser was helping and he thought it was part of the rules I opened this up for debate.

Since this is causing more confusion than it is worth, I am just going to say I am right, since my way more simple.

So - If you are on the bench, you can not come in unless a solo person gets first place or second place. If there are only 3 teams left then the solo person must get first place.

The confusion is some people think bench and eliminated are two different things and that benched means they can come in at any time. That is not true. To the confused people - think of the 9th member on your team as being eliminated - not benched.

Kong, I am okay with the proposal of a double zero benching the whole team, but I am still a bit confused I think. If both get benched, one can be brought in is a solo person gets the highest score? That's the only way correct or wrong?

We're asking that any game mods that submit a score afterwards go through and approve all the scores including their own. So for this contest only you're allowed to approve your own scores. This is to ensure a quickly updated high score board that all participants can check over.

Anyone know how to get the coleco controls to work? I had this problem when I used to play time pilot on coleco. I can map the buttons no problem, but whenever I try to map the joystick it never works. The only way I can get it to work is if I leave it at the default arrow keys.

Kugyince
09-28-2010, 01:51 PM
The Coleco control emulation isn't spot on. You can not roll the joystick easily. It helps to recenter before changing directions.

Example: Normally to move from left to up in Mr. Do! you would would roll the joystick from left, to up/left, to up. You can't do that effectively under this emulator and instead should release left then press up. This is why it's easier for you to play with the arrow keys instead of a D-pad or analog stick.

Slime Slayer
09-28-2010, 01:59 PM
Well, my issue is that they are not working at all if I change them from the arrow keys, I tried mapping up to the "h" key and it still didn't work.

I have a question. I noticed in the rules it mentioned that if your team has two solo players they can join together as a new team.

My question is, does a Solo player have to survive a round to qualify for that, or is just having two solo players on a team enough?

Tails
09-28-2010, 08:54 PM
Thought that would of been your Bench? IE Fungus.

Kong
09-28-2010, 09:10 PM
A solo player does not have to survive a round to create a new pair.

Example Elrod and Dojah can choose to play solo or to team up and create a new pair.

Fungus is benched and can not play until after a solo player wins.
