Which version of Doom should i play?
Missed out on playing the original Doom back as a kid. I see that there are at least 5 different versions of Doom on the site.
Super nintendo, sega 32X, Atari Jaguar, N64 and surprisingly the GBA! Was wondering which version is the best to play in regards to being as close to the PC original. Thanks |
Re: Which version of Doom should i play?
It's hard to say. They were all pretty limited with what they could do in comparison to the PC. I haven't played them really but haven't read great things about them. If I remember, Doom 64 isn't really a port, but it's own game, and the best one out of that group. The Jaguar and 32X are missing enemies and the SNES has mixed reviews. Some people like it, others hate it. After playing the PC version, it was kind frustrating trying to play the SNES port and I quit. That doesn't mean you wont like it, so you can give it a try still.
I would suggest to look up the Ultimate Doom on GOG. It is the pc version, plays great on windows 10, and with a dos emulator, you can transfer it over and play on your phone, although a controller is recommended for that. It is 5.99 normally, but put it on your wishlist if you don't want to spend that much. It goes on sale fairly regularly down to .99 or 1.99. |
Re: Which version of Doom should i play?
I'm currently trying to get the PC versions up. They would be the best. Hopefully this month or next.
From the current versions N64 is probably the best. 32X is probably a close second but with easier controls and better frame rate. SNES is 3rd. Jaguar has split screen - designed for two players and each player only gets half a screen. Very annoying if you are playing single player. GBA is last place. |
Re: Which version of Doom should i play?
Jaguar has no music, and the 32x's music essentially renders it unplayable for me. The music in doom is way too iconic and important to the experience, personally I'd go snes.
@kong I think you are mistaken bout the Jag split screen thing. |
Re: Which version of Doom should i play?
Thanks for the info.Think ill check out the snes version until the PC one is on the site.

I'd skip the Jag and GBA. The Jag did have music and split screen for me. Maybe there is a button to turn off the split screen. The N64 had the best graphics and best sound effects but no music. The SNES had the best music, distant third in graphics. The 32X had the second best graphics, second best music, and smoothest animation. Each had different first levels so each is sort of a different game. |
