Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
For Super Mario Bros (NES), are we allowed to use the shortcuts?

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
Hello, I've been wondering about score submitting on certain games. On certain games you get extra points just for selecting a higher difficulty eg. on Pac-Attack (all versions) you can automaticly start off with 100,000 points by selecting a higher difficulty, and also on Pac-Mania you will get a "courage bonus" of around 70,000 points after finishing the maze for selecting a higher difficulty. In the rules it says you can't make the game difficulty easier but you can make it harder, but I was wondering does this apply to games where it gives you free points for nothing?
For the record in the past before I knew about some of the rules (many years ago) and before this crossed my mind I have selected a higher difficulty in most versions of Pac-Attack/Pac-Panic and I think I did on the SMS Pac-Mania. Can these scores be checked and deleted if this isn't allowed. In fact can my SMS Pac-Mania scores be deleted altogether anyway because I just realised that the select difficulty actualy changes what level you start on and I know you have to start from level 1, thanks.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
As far as I know there is nothing wrong with making it more difficult. The bonus score is kinda expected for turning up the difficulty. If you can do it on hard it just means your better than those noobs on normal or easy.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
I was thinking because some people could just select the highest difficulty and not even try to play then get a game over and still beat the people who actually tried hard for a score, that was on of my worries. If it's ok though thats fine, thanks.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
Do you know of any specific games where just choosing a harder difficulty would make them beat the normal scores? Seems kinda unlikely. Even so I think it would still be ok because it's just a way to play the game and get more points. You would still have to compete with others who got the same bonus.

The rules have changed over the years. They have mostly gotten more stricter as we developed ways to detect different cheats. Originally nearly anything was allowed in most games.
Another game with free points for difficulty/level increase is Rampart. And there are a couple puzzle drop games that do it too.

Worked for me. Default buttons are a/s/z/x left/right. A accelerates. Shifting is automatic.

My bad Kong for some reason I thought you had to shift manually and I spent the whole time trying to figure that out. Over thinking it as usual.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
I would assume for Mario Bros. and Pinball it would be rolling the score.
I didn't know Donkey Kong Jr. was two players. I can't check here as I am still at work, but is there not a mode where the second player is controlled by the Computer?

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
Mario Bros - roll score or level counter, whichever one comes first
Pinball - Max out the score.
The idea behind any pinball game is to last forever, so there shouldn't be any life limit for pinball games.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
Mario Bros I would think get to level 12 or higher. The levels start repeating then.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
For a game like Pokemon Blue » Game Boy, how can I delete my save state and start over? I want to start over but that would make my submission much longer. Basically, I'm trying to ask if there is a way to delete save states for a game to completely start it over.

I disagree. By that logic you could beat a single level in Pac-Man, Space Invaders, etc. and have it count since the levels repeat.
There is no ending and no congratulatory screen. Roll the score or level counter over.

Re: Information and Questions for the Mods...
In the coin-op Pac-Man there are 3 intermissions. The last one plays after round 9.
There are 8 different fruit bonuses. The last one appears on stage 13.
The game never gets harder than stage 17. Stage 18 is slightly easier than stage 17. Stage 19 is the same as stage 17. Every stage after 19 is identical. The difference in difficulty is things like how long the ghost stay blue or how long they flash before turning back.
There is a kill screen at stage 256.
You can not flip the score.
So we could be hardcore and say reach the kill screen - stage 256 or really hard core and get every pellet on the kill screen or say get a perfect score - 3,333,360 - or we could be more realistic and say beat stage 9, 13, 17, or 19.

Master Rule #4 If a game loops, you only need to complete the first loop. That means games with short loops such as Donkey Kong will be very quick and easy to beat.
|
Retro Uprising - FAQ
I think setting goals that no one is going to beat isn't fun. Granted setting goals that everyone's grandmother can beat isn't much more fun but it is the better of the two options. Also as few rule exceptions as possible are preferable. And the rule is if you loop a game it is mastered.
